August Brey

August Brey (born August 1, 1864 in Gelnhausen ; † July 28, 1937 in Ronnenberg ) was a German SPD politician .

Life and work

After attending primary school in Gelnhausen, Brey, who was of Protestant faith, completed an apprenticeship as a shoemaker in Frankfurt am Main from 1878 to 1881 . He then worked in this profession until 1892. He was fired several times because of his political commitment. In 1890 he took over the chairmanship of the Association of Factory, Agricultural and Auxiliary Workers in Germany and in 1892 became editor of the association newspaper Der Proletarian . In 1931 he resigned from the association's chairmanship for reasons of age.

After Brey is August Brey Street named in Gelnhausen.

Political party

Brey had been a member of the SPD since 1885. In 1906 he was elected chairman of the state organization for the province of Hanover .

MP

Brey belonged to the Reichstag of the Empire from 1906 to 1918 for the constituency of Hanover 8 ( Hanover-Linden ). In the 1906 by-election, when the Social Democratic MP Heinrich Meister had died, Brey was put up as a compromise candidate within the party after the party executive, which Karl Liebknecht wanted to enforce, and the local structure that Emil Rauch preferred, initially could not agree on a candidate. In 1919/20 he was a member of the Weimar National Assembly . Then he was again a member of the Reichstag until July 1932 . Brey was also a member of the Prussian state parliament from 1919 .
