August Hoffmann von Vestenhof was born in 1848, the son of the kk general staff doctor “Dr. Franz Joseph Carl Bernhard Ritter Hoffmann von Vestenhof ”, ennobled by Franz Joseph I , Emperor of Austria . He was in the Austrian KuK Army as a lieutenant (later major) in the 22nd Infantry Regiment in Vienna.

After his time in the Imperial Army, he became a painter. "The victim of Moloch" was the name of his painting in Stuck's manner ; it caused a sensation and made the name August Hoffmann von Vestenhof known. He was also a sculptor: in 1906 in the great Herkomer competition (which was supposed to create a trophy as the so-called "Stellin Prize" for the car race of the same name), he and the court goldsmith Theodor Heiden received second prize for their bronze in the form of a wine cooler; and his fountain with Princess Thurn and Taxis as the main character has been discussed a lot.

His works were exhibited in the Glaspalast in Munich . In this context he also worked for the Munich weekly newspaper Die Jugend and at Simplicissimus .

The coffee house " Stefanie " of Munich literature was the meeting point for the Schwabing bohemians . The table in the adjoining room at the back on the right belonged to Major Hoffmann von Vestenhof. So he was the head of Café Stefanie.
