Max Nonnenbruch
Max Nonnenbruch (born January 25, 1857 in Viersen , † March 13, 1922 in Munich ) was a German painter of the Munich School , Neoclassicism and Symbolism .
Life
Max Nonnenbruch was born in Viersen as the son of the cadastral inspector Alwin Nonnenbruch and his wife Karoline, née Gössling . He spent his childhood and first school days in Mönchengladbach . From 1868 the family lived in Bonn , where he attended the royal high school. In the school year 1871–1872 he was a senior (9th grade) and in 1872 performed the poem The Battle of Friedrich Schiller at the closing ceremonies of the school year . As a teenager he developed the desire to become a painter. From autumn 1875 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy for two semesters . On May 2, 1877 he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and studied under Wilhelm von Lindenschmit , among others, until 1879. He composed the text for Eduard Unger's (1853-1894) picture cycle From the Four Seasons to. The cycle and the texts were published by Friedrich Bruckmann in Munich in 1880 . From 1880 he made several trips to Paris and Italy , including with his college friends Arthur Langhammer , Hans Olde and Claus Meyer . He also toured Belgium and England . On Capri he met Gerhart Hauptmann and his brother Carl Hauptmann and in 1883 drew a caricature of the two brothers in the hotel's guest book. After completing his military service he met on Capri Margarethe Anna Maria 1894 Baroness of Welck , whom he on 4 October 1884 in Serkowitz married and with whom he is a studio apartment in the Landwehrstraße 62 referred in Munich.
Max Nonnenbruch became deputy chairman of the economic association of visual artists , chairman of the Munich Artist Support Association , member of the General German Art Cooperative and the Munich Artists Cooperative . In 1889 he was a board member of the Munich Artists' Cooperative, and from 1890 he was also deputy secretary . On the occasion of the international art exhibition in Munich's Glaspalast in 1892 , he was secretary of the exhibition committee, chairman of the raffle commission, member of the catalog and finance commission and finally responsible for contact with the English participants in the annual exhibitions. In 1892 and 1893 he traveled to England for this reason. In 1893 he and his wife moved to Nymphenburger Strasse 43 . For his services to the organization of the English department at the international art exhibition in 1893 in the Glaspalast, he was awarded the Order of Merit of St. Michael 4th Class by the Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria . At the New Year celebrations in 1894 he was awarded the Order of Merit of St. Michael 3rd Class. That year he visited England again, traveling back through Paris, Bordeaux and Nice . He also worked in the exhibition management in 1894 and 1895. In 1896 he wrote the article Modern Art and Robert Fowler for the magazine Die Kunst der Zeit . In 1899 he moved with his wife to Friedrichstrasse and in 1902 to the house he had acquired at Mandlstrasse 10 in the Schwabing district . In 1907 he was a member of the Comité Local D'Organisation of the XVI. World Peace Congress in Munich.
Max Nonnenbruch frequented the Viennese Café Stefanie in Munich for years and also played chess there . Erich Mühsam often mentioned him in his diaries and in his apolitical memoirs . On Sunday, June 9, 1912, Erich Mühsam, accompanied by Mary Pfefferle, visited Max Nonnenbusch and his deaf wife on Mandlstrasse . He arranged for Max Nonnenbusch Mary as a model and Nonnenbruch took some photos of her. After Max Nonnenbruch had paid for it, he showed Erich Mühsam around the house where he had many pictures. Erich Mühsam was particularly impressed by a picture by the painter Leo Samberger from Nonnenbruch's collection.
Max Nonnenbruch pictures were often reproduced, as a wood engraving or as a heliogravure reproduction by the art publisher Franz Hanfstaengl . The reproductions have been published in many international magazines and newspapers. In 1918 two reproductions of his pictures in Religious Pictures and in 1921 five reproductions of his pictures in 1000 Pictures: A selection from the publisher were printed by the art publisher Franz Hanfstaengl. His pictures were also popular postcard motifs. There were many editions that appeared in different countries, but more or less good reproductions of his painting motifs are also widespread on vases or plates. His painting Die Rose from 1892 (or before) inspired Elsa Bernstein to write her poem Die Rose for this painting under her pseudonym Ernst Rosmer .
family
Margarethe Anna Maria Nonnenbruch (* February 2, 1856 in Liebau ; † December 17, 1930), born von Welck , was a daughter of Kurt Heinrich Freiherr von Welck (* October 27, 1827; † December 30, 1908), heir to Liebau , and Clara Weiß (born August 11, 1833, † August 7, 1862), daughter of the manufacturer Emil Weiß from Langensalza and granddaughter of Curt Robert Freiherr von Welck . With Max Nonnenbruch she had two sons and a daughter. Her son Wilhelm Nonnenbruch was born on November 6, 1887 in Munich and their daughter Marie († 1973) was born on November 11, 1893, also in Munich. In 1924 Marie Nonnenbruch gave a female head on paper by Robert Fowler to the Heinemann Gallery and received the work back a few months later. It could perhaps have been the study head from Max Nonnenbruch's article on Robert Fowler. Marie Nonnenbruch married the physicist Eduard Rüchardt on April 7, 1925 .

Image composition
In Max Nonnenbruch's versions of Young Woman on the Beach , also Girl on the Beach , the rule of thirds was applied to the composition of the pictures, with the horizontal line separating the upper third and the central third. Vertically, the woman hits the border between the left third and the middle third, just as the reflecting sunlight hits the border between the middle third and the right third.
