history

The art and auction house Kastern was founded in 1975 by Karl-Heinz Kastern; the family business has been run by his wife, Margitta Kastern and daughter Christina Kastern-Benatzky since 2003. In 2013, the company moved from Aegidientorplatz to a house at Baringstrasse 8, which had previously been converted and offers more space than the old location. Asian objects, old masters, photographs, art and ceramics, furniture, modern art, porcelain, silver and jewelry will be auctioned. Collections u. a. from north German aristocratic property and paintings, prints and sculptures by many national and international, well-known artists have already been sold by the auction house. The art and auction house Kastern is a member of the Bundesverband deutscher Kunstversteigerer e. V. , on whose initiative the database of critical works was launched in 2005 .

In 1987 furniture, paintings, weapons, porcelain and other items from the legacy of tennis baron Gottfried von Cramm were auctioned at the auction house. The total proceeds amounted to about 250,000 DM .

In 2001, the Toplos playing card harmonica - Merzbild 5a , also a picture with playing cards and my address , was auctioned by Kurt Schwitters within ten minutes at a sensational record price of 670,000 DM. Schwitters Abstraction 45 ball dress was sold for 150,000 DM at the same auction. In 2005 the Merz picture 5a was auctioned again at Sotheby’s , but it did not achieve a high price there.

In March 2001, the Kastern auction house auctioned eight love letters, a diary and a cigarette case from the actress Marlene Dietrich . The pieces came from private ownership in Hanover and were only discovered a few months beforehand. The letters were addressed to the baker Willy Michel and were written in 1921 and 1922, the diary in 1920 and 1921. The pieces went to a fan, private collector and the Berlin Film Museum , which is also in the possession of the estate of Marlene Dietrich is.

In front of Carl Spitzweg's inn , around 1870 to 1875

In 2003 a collector bought a previously unknown oil painting by the painter Carl Spitzweg with the title Before the Inn at Kastern for 320,000 euros . In 2008, another Spitzweg was auctioned at Kastern, this time with the title Lektüre am Morgen .

In 2004, a throne-like Bugatti chair that Elton John once owned was auctioned at Christie's . In 2007, a similar example was auctioned at Kastern, which achieved almost double.

Also in 2007, Hiltrud Schwetje had parts of the art collection that she had put together with her ex-husband, former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder , auctioned at the renowned auction house, including gifts from artists with dedications, such as Roland Dörfler and Uwe Bremer , as well as pictures , which Gerhard Schröder painted himself. A bidder who did not want to be named was awarded the contract for the 85 works.

Although the auction would have been legally permissible, the auction house stopped a planned auction of medals and weapons from the Nazi era in September 2007 because the constitution protection and several politicians had expressed concerns, including in an open letter that right-wing extremists could bid for the items .

In 2009, among other things, a collection of 350 artistically valuable and aesthetic nude photographs by a South German publisher, by photographers such as Günter Blum , Sylvie Blum , William Klein , Bettina Rheims , Norbert Guthier , Thomas Karsten , Alfred Steffen and František Drtikol, was auctioned off . That was the first large photo auction of its kind in the traditional house.

In 2010, 57 portraits of the Teutonic Order from the order hall of the Lucklum manor were auctioned off . The painting collection included portraits of members of the Brunswick ducal house and their wives, grand masters , commander and knights of the Teutonic Order from the most famous families of the nobility and the nobility , including portraits of Gottlob Friedrich Wilhelm von Hardenberg (uncle of Novalis ), Friedrich II. von Prussia , Philippine Charlotte von Prussia , Antoinette Amalie von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , Karl I. von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , Ferdinand Albrecht II. von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , Ferdinand von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , Ludwig Rudolf von Braunschweig -Wolfenbüttel Wolfenbüttel , Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , August Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , Elisabeth Sophie Marie von Schleswig-Holstein-Norburg , Ernst Ferdinand von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern , Augusta von Hannover , Christine Luise von Oettingen-Oettingen , Otto Diedrich von Bülow , Heinrich von Bobenhausen , Friedri ch Hannibal von Schmertzing , Johann Friedrich von und zum Stein , Georg Levin von Winterfeld , Johann Eustach von Westernach , Clemens August von Bayern , Karl von Österreich , Leopold Wilhelm von Österreich , Maximilian Franz von Österreich , Karl Joseph von Österreich , Maximilian III. , Franz Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg , Johann Caspar von Ampringen , Karl Alexander von Lothringen and Johann Kaspar von Stadion by painters such as Johann Conrad Eichler , Joachim Kayser, Johann Georg Ziesenis the Younger , Gottfried Boy , Anton Graff , Christoph Bernhard Francke , Jean Pierre Sauvage , Francesco Carlo Rusca and Anna Rosina de Gasc .

Also in 2010, woodcuts , lithographs and drawings by Alfred Hanf were auctioned at Kastern, which he once gave to a pharmacist from Worbis , including two portraits of the actor Ferdinand Gregori .

In November 2011, a 194-year-old, previously unknown travel diary by August Kestner reappeared in the art trade when it was delivered to Kastern by an unknown collector for the winter auction. The auction house ensured that the city of Hanover was able to purchase it well below the estimated price of 60,000 euros so that it does not disappear in a private collection, but is made accessible to the public. Kestner was accompanied on this trip by Otto Magnus von Stackelberg , with whom he later founded the Friends of the Roman Hyperboreans . Kestner's trip to Tuscany in 1817 was previously completely unknown. The volume from 1817 closed a gap that the Kestner experts did not even know about. At the time, the city archive of Hanover kept another 72 travel diaries from Kestner. The purchase was sponsored by the Friends of the City Archives and the Antike and Contemporary Sponsors of the August Kestner Museum .

In the case of the theft of the golden Leibniz biscuit by Bahlsen , which was made by the sculptor Georg Herting , the art historian Christina Kastern from the Kastern auction house gave the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung a valuation of the biscuit, which she did not even classify as art. Shortly afterwards, the newspaper and Bahlsen received a letter of liability with extortionate content.

Also in 2013, the auction house auctioned a 240-kilo iron relief that came from the office of the Reichstag building and was rescued from the rubble in 1954. This allegory of science shows a seated, unclothed goddess with a covered pubis, a raised torch and a spring urn, at her side a male lion rests in front of a rising sun.

In September 2015, the portrait of Caroline Lizius by Joseph Karl Stieler was called up at Kastern's autumn auction. The rediscovery of this painting is of art historical importance, as it was originally created for the Schönheitengalerie , but was refused by the Bavarian king, Ludwig I, as the client. Then a second painting was made, showing the sitter two years older and can still be seen in Nymphenburg Palace today. According to tradition, the artist is said to have given the first version, which was auctioned at Kastern in 2015, to Caroline Lizius (sister of Bernhard Lizius ). This version of Caroline Lizius is therefore the only painting in the gallery of beauty that has ever entered the art market.

A sketch by Karl Hubbuch , entitled Die neue Sister , to be auctioned at Kastern was made a topic in December 2015 by the art historian Lisa Zeitz in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit .

In March 2016, three large-format oil paintings by Ferdinand Wagner from the cycle The Five Senses of Man , which were believed to be lost, were put up for auction, which were commissioned by Siegmund Seligmann in 1906 for the Villa Seligmann . These three, of the original five allegories, are titled Vision , Hearing, and Taste . The other two allegories did not survive the last war. The seller of the three allegories was not satisfied with the result of the auction and kept the paintings. The estate of the painter and graphic artist Arnold Leissler was also sold at the same auction .

The star chef and celebrity innkeeper Rainer Wolfgang Feuchter wrote in his book The Somewhat Different Guest Book - Twenty amusing stories about celebrities in connection with recipes for a new, simple kitchen , which appeared in 2016, not only about his celebrity guests, but also in that Chapter Ernst August von Hannover and the monarchist style of communication about a portrait of Godfrey Kneller , which shows Georg I and was bought by Feuchter at the art and auction house Kastern. It hung in his restaurant Lila Kranz in Hanover for more than 10 years until, at an exhibition in the Historisches Museum am Hohen Ufer, in the presence of Heinrich Prince von Hanover, he pointed out to the director of the museum that the museum only had a poor copy of his painting and that a finger was missing from the copy, which was also proven when he got the original and the two pictures were hung side by side. For the duration of the exhibition, both pictures were finally shown side by side. He offered the painting to the museum for sale, but it did not have the necessary funds, so that even today only the copy is shown. However, the Sparkasse Hannover showed interest and bought the painting for 24,000 euros. The Yale University Art Gallery also has a painting by Godfrey Kneller with the same motif.

In September 2016, a second version of a portrait by Michiel van Musscher showing François Le Fort was auctioned for 100,000 euros after a long bidding war. The other version is in the Musée d'art et d'histoire in Geneva.

From October 2018, Florian Meyer , who worked for the art and auction house Kastern until July 2020, appeared as an expert for antiques and art in the 8th season of the ZDF series Bares for Rares . The episodes were shot with him in July 2018.

activity

Art auctions are held four times a year in collaboration with art historians from various fields. An exhibition is designed for each auction on an area of 1000 m². Apart from the auctions, customers can use the free sale in the house all year round. Kastern offers its customers four different options to participate in an auction: as a hall bidder, as a written bidder, as a telephone bidder and as a live bidder on the computer. Kastern helps and advises on estate and inheritance regulations as well as on building up or dissolving art collections. Price estimates or appraisals of works of art are also prepared for insurance purposes, bank loans and security.
