Georg Levin von Winterfeld (* 1674 in Kutzerow in the Uckermark ; † February 21, 1728 in Königsberg ) was a Prussian major general and chief of the cuirassier regiment "du Portail" as well as knight of the German order , Komtur der Balley in Lower Saxony, Landdrost von Ravensberg , hereditary lord von Kuglacken and Breitenstein in East Prussia to Kutzerow and Menkin in the Uckermark.

Life

Georg Levin was the son of Adam Valentin von Winterfeld (1637–1677) and his wife Elisabeth Charlotte, born von Hacke from the Berge family . Major General Kaspar Dietlof von Winterfeld was his brother.

Military career

Winterfeld was educated in his parents' home and later in the gymnasium of Stettin . He was originally supposed to pursue a civilian career, but in 1692 he joined the Brandenburg army and became a cadet in the electoral White Guard . For five years he was a non-commissioned officer and fought in the Palatinate War of Succession in Brabant . He took part in the sieges of Huy and Namur and was able to distinguish himself there so that he received his own company in 1698 . In 1702 he changed to Mecklenburg services. There he became captain of the “ von Krassow ” regiment . He added a company on horseback and one on foot to the regiment at his own expense . It was moved to the Upper Rhine under the command of Colonel von Meerheim . Winterfeld was promoted to major during the campaign and took part in the sieges of Kaiserwerth , Landau , Liège and the battle of Höchstedt . In the second battle near Höchstedt in 1704 he lost the horse under his body.

With his bravery in the battles he fell Leopold of Anhalt-Dessau on which the King of Prussia him Frederick I recommended. It was so emphatic that the king made him his adjutant general . Winterfeld therefore left the Mecklenburg service and returned to the Prussian Army . He first came to the "Margrave Ludwig" regiment and then to the "Anhalt-Dessau" regiment . Winterfeld fought in Italy under Prince Eugen and Anhalt-Dessau and took part in the battles of Cassano , Calcinato , Turin and Toulon . He was badly wounded in the head near Turin and it took three months to recover. After that he fought at Susa , Exilles and Fenestrelles . In 1710 he was promoted to colonel .

Returned to Prussia in 1715, Winterfeld fought in the Pomeranian campaign on Rügen and in front of Stralsund in 1715/16 . In 1717 he fought in the Balkans and took part in the siege of Belgrade . In 1718 he became chief of the cuirassier regiment "du Portail". In 1721 he was appointed major general in the army camp of Wangitten and in 1723 appointed to Drost von Sparrenberg near Minden. From King Friedrich Wilhelm I he received the previous fiefdom Steinmocker in Western Pomerania in 1723 as Allodium and in 1724 the Kuglacken estate. As early as 1716 he became a member of the Teutonic Order and was appointed Commander of Lower Saxony. He died on February 21, 1728.
