Eichler's self-portrait (created in Rome in 1713)

Johann Conrad Eichler , pseudonym Wollust (born December 3, 1680 in Peine , † January 19, 1748 in Wolfenbüttel ), was a German painter .

Life

Eichler received his training in Rome from 1709 to 1716. From 1713 he was a student of Carlo Maratta and Francesco Trevisani . In Rome in 1713 he painted the first of his three previously known self-portraits. There he married Margherita Kornfeld, the daughter of a Vatican soldier, who gave birth to his son Julian in 1712 and his son Joseph Ignaz in 1714, both of whom later became painters themselves. He then worked briefly in Nuremberg until he became court and cabinet painter at the court of Duke Ludwig Rudolf von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , who at that time still resided in Blankenburg . His daughter Sophie Luise Ferdinandine was born in 1720, his third son Joseph in 1724. On May 10, 1729, he appraised over fifty paintings from the possession of Countess Aurora von Königsmarck , who had died the year before, in the Quedlinburg provostry . In 1730 Eichler moved to the court in Wolfenbüttel, where he also died.

His works, which are mostly signed on the back with JC Eichler pinxit (year) , are or were in Marienburg Castle , in the Duke Anton Ulrich Museum Braunschweig, in the Braunschweig Castle Museum , in Blankenburg Castle , in Salzdahlum Castle and in private ownership.

In the auction Property from the royal house of Hanover of the auction house Sotheby’s at Marienburg Castle in October 2005, around 14 paintings by Eichler and his surroundings from the possession of the Welfen were auctioned on behalf of Ernst August Prince von Hannover junior to renovate the castle with the proceeds.

His work mainly includes portraits of princes and their relatives, especially of the nobles of the House of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel .

After 1720, portraits of Emperor Karl VI were created for the Imperial Hall there at Blankenburg Castle . , his wife Elisabeth Christine (daughter of Duke Anton Ulrich ), her sister Charlotte Christine and her husband, the then Russian heir to the throne Aleksei , all of whom Eichler painted with the help of original portraits, because at the time the named people were no longer there or have never been to Blankenburg.

But he also painted self-portraits , still lifes , a portrait of the composer and Brunswick court music director Georg Caspar Schürmann with a piano roll in his hand (which was considered lost, but reappeared at an auction in December 2005).

Also the only authentic portrait of Friederike Caroline Neuber (Neuberin) identified in 2008 with her theater troupe, which was formerly located as a wall covering in the Redoutensaal at Blankenburg Castle, had been moved to the Moritzburg in Halle since the Second World War and in 1992 in the attic behind a paneling of the local Talamt building was found, probably comes from his hand.

Some of his pictures were made by engravers such as B. Jakob Wilhelm Heckenauer (* around 1670; † 1738) engraved.
