August Silberstein
August Karl Silberstein (born July 1, 1827 in Ofen , Austrian Empire , † March 7, 1900 ) was an Austrian writer and revolutionary .
Life
Silberstein attended grammar school in Ofen and became an office clerk in Vienna . He left the commercial profession and studied at the University of Vienna . In 1848 he was elected secretary of the magazine "Aula" . He joined the Academic Legion and was involved with his satirical magazine Leuchtkugeln for the revolution of 1848/49 in the Austrian Empire . When it failed and the magazine was censored , he fled to Germany in 1851 . After his return he was tried in a court martial in 1854 and sentenced to five years imprisonment on the Spielberg , but given an amnesty after two years .
Shaped by rural life, Silberstein wrote stories about village life and published popular collections of fables. His poems influenced contemporaries like Peter Rosegger ; some were set to music, for example “Wenn du ein Herzig Liebchen” by Johann Strauss (father) and “Germanenzug ” and “Helgoland” by Anton Bruckner .
