August Weiß (politician)

August Weiß (born September 18, 1832 in Geneva , † December 21, 1927 in Eßlingen am Neckar ) was a sparkling wine maker and member of the German Reichstag .

Life

Weiß attended the Lyceum in Esslingen, the institute in Stetten and from 1847 to 1850 the commercial school in Leipzig . He completed commercial training in Bremen , Marseille and London and traveled to Europe and North Africa. In 1866 he took over the management of the Kessler Sektkellerei , the oldest of its kind in Germany, from his father Carl Weiß . Since 1878 he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Stuttgart and a long-term member of the Eßlingen municipal council. In 1902 he withdrew from the business of sparkling wine and transferred his share of the business to his son Rudolf Weiß.

From 1890 to 1893 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the constituency of Württemberg 5 ( Eßlingen , Nürtingen , Kirchheim , Urach ) and the National Liberal Party , which appeared in Württemberg as the German party . Here he was successfully active against the introduction of a sparkling wine tax, which was only introduced in 1902.
