August von Binzer

Baron August Daniel von Binzer (born May 30, 1793 in Kiel ; † March 20, 1868 in Neisse , Silesia ) was a German poet , journalist and fraternity member .

origin

His parents were Johann Ludwig Jacob Freiherr von Binzer (* February 14, 1746 in Langenselbold, Hesse; † November 11, 1811 in Kiel) and Margaretha Elisabeth Louise Ericius (* February 7, 1760 in Schleswig; † September 21, 1839 in Kiel) .

Life

Binzer studied at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel and the University of Jena . In 1817 he was the founding father of the fraternity movement in Kiel, where he became a member of the Teutonia fraternity in Kiel . In Jena he joined the original fraternity . He took part in the Wartburg Festival of 1817 .

He became known through two of his songs, Toast! (1817) and we had built a stately house (1819). The second song was created to dissolve the Jena fraternity and contains the line “The band is cut up / War Roth Black and Gold”, in which the three colors of the fraternity were recorded in writing for the first time. The latter song was immortalized much later (1881) by Johannes Brahms as a trumpet theme in his Academic Festival Overture.

As a journalist and writer, v. Binzer in many German cities, including Altenburg , Glücksburg (Baltic Sea) , Flensburg , Leipzig , Cologne and Augsburg . He wrote for newspapers , edited encyclopedias, and published short stories and short stories .

Was married to v. Binzer since 1822 with the writer Emilie Henriette Adelheid von Gerschau , who outlived him by 21 years. A street in Linz is named after her. He spent his last years in Linz and Altaussee in Styria . Several children came from the marriage, including the writer and painter Carl von Binzer .
