Augustin-Daniel Belliard , comte Belliard et de l'Empire (born March 23, 1769 in Fontenay-le-Comte , Département Vendée , † January 28, 1832 in Brussels ) was a French general .

biography

Belliard first distinguished himself as a senior officer under Dumouriez in Belgium in 1792 and 1793 , was deposed after his defection, but voluntarily rejoined the army as a commoner, was in 1795 as adjutant general and colonel in the western army under Hoche , distinguished himself in Italy in 1796 and 1797 at Castiglione , Caldiero , Arcole and on other occasions due to his bravery and was promoted to Général de brigade .

In the Egyptian expedition he fought with distinction in the Battle of the Pyramids , became governor of Upper Egypt and advanced to Nubia . After Bonaparte's departure, hastening to the aid of General Kléber , he and his division fought back the enemy cavalry in the battle of Heliopolis .

Belliard also participated in the capture of Bulal and Cairo and defended the latter until he was forced to surrender on June 27, 1801. In 1805 he became Adjutant General Murats , fought under him from 1805 to 1807 against Austria, Prussia and Russia and followed the same to Spain, where he received the governorate of Madrid in December 1808 .

In the Russian campaign of 1812 he was again Murat's adjutant general, was appointed Colonel général of the cuirassiers in December 1812 , and in 1813 as adjutant general of the emperor and fought near Dresden , Leipzig and Hanau and, dangerously injured, withdrew to the fortress of Mainz with the remains of the army back.

After the battle of Craonne (March 1814), where he stood out and sustained serious wounds, he became commandant of the Cavalerie de la Garde impériale .

Louis XVIII made him peer of France . After the return of Napoleon I from Elba , Belliard followed the royal family to Beauvais , but went back to Paris at the king's command and immediately received a mission from Napoleon to Murat, and then the command of the Moselle army.

After the Battle of Waterloo , he submitted to Louis XVIII. again, but was struck from the list of pairs and arrested in November 1815, suspected of participating in a plot to liberate Napoleon. Released after a few months, in 1819 he was returned to the rank of peer.

In the Chamber of Peers he was one of those who opposed the reactionary aspirations of the court, and in 1830 he joined the July monarchy . He was sent to Vienna to have Ludwig Philip recognized , but to Belgium in March 1831 to help secure Leopold's new throne . There he made an outstanding contribution to the organization of the army and took part in the election of King Leopold and in negotiations about his marriage. He died in Brussels on January 28, 1832. His memoirs were edited by Vinet (Paris 1842, 3 vols.).

Honors

His name is entered on the triumphal arch in Paris in the 24th column.

A street in the 18th arrondissement of Paris is named after him, as is the rue Belliard / Belliardstraat in Brussels , which runs through the middle of the European quarter . It runs parallel to the Rue de loi from the Parc de Bruxelles past various EU buildings and the Parc Leopold to the Jubelparc.
