Augustin Novák

Augustin Novák (born September 20, 1872 in Kralupy nad Vltavou , † May 9, 1951 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak economist and finance minister.

Political career

Augustin Novák, who belonged to the Československá národní demokracie (Czechoslovak National Democratic Party), studied at the commercial academy in Prague. After graduating, he worked in the banking sector: from 1889 to 1898 at Česká banka Union, then at Zemská banka (Landesbank) in Prague, where he became the director of the commercial department in 1916.

After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, Novák played a key role in the currency separation and the development of the new currency strategy, where he worked closely with Alois Rašín , who was Finance Minister from 1918 to 1919 . From 1919 to 1926, Novák was the chief director of the bank office at the Ministry of Finance and held this position until 1934 after the bank office was transformed into the Czechoslovak National Bank (Národní banka československá). From 1921 to 1922 Novák was Minister of Finance in the Edvard Beneš government .
