Jaroslav Kabeš

Jaroslav Kabeš (born June 18, 1896 in Tábor , † August 15, 1964 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak economist, banker and politician of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (CPC). He was Czechoslovak Finance Minister from 1949 to 1953 and General Director of the Czechoslovak State Bank in the 1950s. He was interested in philosophy and literature and wrote poems himself, also under various pseudonyms.

Life and political career

Jaroslav Kabeš attended a grammar school and the commercial academy in Chrudim from 1907 to 1914 . During the First World War he served in Italy and Russia. He then worked for various banks, including the Agrární banka . Kabeš was one of the founding members of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KPTsch) in 1921. He took part in the party's illegal work in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . From 1946 to 1954 he was a member of the Central Committee of the KPTsch, then until 1962 a member of the Central Audit and Control Commission of the Central Committee of the KPTsch.

In September 1945 Kabeš was appointed General Director of the Agricultural Bank ( Zemědělská banka , formerly Agricultural Bank), in October 1946 the first deputy director of the Commercial Bank ( Živnostenská banka ) and was at the same time in the administration and on the bank council of the Czechoslovak National Bank ( Národní banka československá ) active. From 1953 to 1957, Kabeš was General Director of the Czechoslovak State Bank ( Státní banka československá ).

In the governments of Antonín Zápotocký and Viliam Široký I, Kabeš held the post of finance minister from April 4, 1949 to September 14, 1953 and as such was largely responsible for the preparation and implementation of the 1953 currency reform, which destroyed the people's savings led to a decline in the standard of living.

In 1961 Kabeš received the Order of the Republic .
