Augustine Rosentreter, Bishop of Culm

Augustinus Rosentreter (born January 13, 1844 in Abrau, Konitz district , West Prussia ; † October 4, 1926 in Pelplin , Powiat Dirschau , Pommerellen ) was a German clergyman and Catholic bishop of Kulm .

Life

Born August Johann, descendants of two Schulzen families - Musolf and Schwemin - from the Koschnaewjerdörfer Schlagenthin and Deutsch Cekzin and son of a large farmer's family from the Koschneiderei in Abrau in 1844 . After graduating from high school in Konitz, August Rosentreter entered the seminary in Pelplin. After disease-related interruptions, he continued his studies at the universities of Bonn and Münster continued and was on March 12, 1870 in the Cathedral of Pelplin for priests ordained . After pastoral work in Neuchâtel, West Prussia and as vicar at the Brigittenkirche in Gdansk , he became professor of biblical exegesis at the seminary in Pelplin in 1871 at the age of 27 . In 1876 the seminar was closed due to the Kulturkampf , so its teaching activities were interrupted until 1887. Rosentreter used these years, among other things, for exegetical studies abroad. In addition, from 1881 he held various positions at the official office. With the reopening of the seminary in 1887 he resumed his teaching activities in Pelplin and was also appointed Regens and Cathedral Chapter . From 1896 he also took over the professorship for moral theology .

In 1874, from Pelplin, Rosentreter gave intensive support to the establishment of the Catholic student association Borussia-Königsberg in the KV and other KV associations, since for him the Catholic associations had an important function in giving the Catholic students a home in the Kulturkampf. Because of his commitment to the connections, Rosentreter became an honorary member of the KV connections in Königsberg near Borussia, in Gdansk near Pruthenia and in Breslau near Unitas, Franco-Borussia and Alania.

After the death of the Kulm bishop Leo Redner , Rosentreter was elected to his successor on December 22, 1898 and on February 27 of the following year by Pope Leo XIII. approved. The Ermland bishop Andreas Thiel donated him the episcopal ordination on July 9, 1899 . Trying to find a balance between the German-speaking and Polish-speaking church people in his diocese, he remained in office when large parts of the diocese came to the Second Republic of Poland through the Treaty of Versailles and the German-speaking Catholics became a minority through the outsourcing of western diocesan areas. A year before his death, Rosentreter accepted a Polish coadjutor with the right of succession.

Augustine Rosentreter found his final resting place in the cathedral of Pelplin.

Honors

The Theological Faculty of the University of Münster awarded Rosentreter an honorary doctorate in 1896 .
