The Capitol

The riot at the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump took place on the afternoon (local time) of January 6, 2021 in Washington, DC . At the request of Trump, thousands of his supporters had gathered at a "Save America" rally since January 5 to protest the result of the 2020 presidential election in the United States . On January 6th, they stormed the Capitol Parliament building at 2:15 p.m. after a large rally at which Trump appeared in the media . At around 5:40 p.m. local time, the building was again considered "secured". Four people died.

prehistory

Protesters in Ellipse Park

On January 6, Congress was scheduled to count the votes of the Electoral College to confirm the election victory of President-elect Joe Biden .

A demonstration by supporters of Donald Trump under the name Save America had long been announced. President Trump had announced several times in advance that January 6, 2021 would be “wild” - first on December 19, 2020 in a tweet on Twitter , and most recently when he addressed his supporters on the day of the riot.

Trump, who continued to deny having lost the election, and his adviser Rudy Giuliani , spoke to protesters in The Ellipse Park on the morning of January 6 , repeating conspiracy theories about an alleged manipulation of the election. Trump said "we will never give in". He ended his speech with the words:

“So we're going, we're going down Pennsylvania Avenue - I love Pennsylvania Avenue - and we're going to the Capitol and we're going to try to give ... The Democrats are incorrigible. They never vote for anything, not even a vote. But we will try to support our Republicans, the weak and the strong do not need our help, we will try to give them the pride and strength they need to take our country back. "

Trump then drove to the White House.

procedure

Following Trump's request, a larger group of demonstrators marched towards the Capitol. At around 2:15 p.m. local time, protesters began attempting to storm the Capitol. They managed to break through the barriers and get into the closed building. Several of the intruders made it into the Senate Chamber . One of them took the seat of the Senate President and yelled "Trump won this election". In addition, the protesters broke into the office of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives , Nancy Pelosi , a. They also occupied the boardroom of the House of Representatives . Several congressmen had to flee inside the building and barricade themselves in rooms. A protester sustained a gunshot wound to which she died shortly after in hospital.

Shortly after a speech by Trump's elected successor, Joe Biden , in which he called on Trump to call on his supporters to end the "siege", Trump released a video calling for an end to the unrest while still insisting the election was "fraudulent" and "stolen". At around 5:40 p.m. local time, the rioters were pushed back and the building was once again considered "secured".

The City of Washington imposed a curfew from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. local time. The National Guard was mobilized by Donald Trump, according to the White House. In contrast, Defense Secretary Richard V. Spencer said that he had not discussed the sending of the National Guard with Trump, but "went straight to Vice Mike Pence ".

The riots inside the Capitol interrupted the formal recognition of the results of the 2020 US presidential election . According to Senator Jeff Merkley (D), the ballots , the results reports of the individual states, were saved at the last minute by Senate employees. Vice President Mike Pence was in the house during the Capitol occupation. He was taken to a safe room by security forces.

The Senate session continued at 8 p.m. local time.

Perpetrator

Militant representatives of the alt-right movement forced their way into the building of the US Congress . Some of the perpetrators wore caps from the MAGA movement. The perpetrators included Proud Boys , who characterize themselves as Western chauvinists, and representatives from QAnon , a network of conspiracy theorists. One of the intruders was a person dressed as a Statue of Liberty with a large QAnon logo. According to National Public Radio , some of the Proud Boys are said to have chanted “Storm the Capitol” and “1776!”. Since most of the perpetrators did not wear COVID masks and there are numerous TV and cell phone recordings of the attack, this makes it easier to identify the perpetrators later.

There are also violent riots by the same group of perpetrators in front of the Capitol, on its steps. In one scene that was taped, they destroyed cameras and other journalists' work materials.

Reactions

In the USA

In the afternoon, Vice President Mike Pence was asked from several quarters to trigger the 25th Amendment to the Constitution ; H. the assumption of official business because of " insanity " ( madness ) of the US president. This request came from former Secretary of Defense William Cohen ( Republican ) and from Democratic Congressmen David Cicilline , Charlie Crist and Ted Lieu , and then from an association of Republican entrepreneurs, the National Association of Manufacturers .

Congressman Ilhan Omar (Democrats) began formulating a second impeachment motion against Donald Trump during the evacuation of the Capitol by the National Guard . The governor of the state of Vermont , Phil Scott (Republican), called for the resignation Trumps or his removal from office.

Republican Senator Mitt Romney described in a press release released on the evening of January 6, the proceedings as an "insurrection, instigated by the President of the United States." Those MPs who continue to support its “dangerous game by objecting to the results of a legally compliant democratic election will forever be seen as accomplices in an unprecedented attack on our democracy.” He cited “the hurt pride of a selfish person and the indignation of his supporters, whom he had deliberately deceived over the past two months ”.

Several former Presidents of the United States spoke about what had happened. Barack Obama described it as "shame and shame" for the United States, instigated by the incumbent president, who continued to spread unfounded lies about the outcome of the legal election. George W. Bush was appalled by the ruthless behavior of some leaders since the election and the lack of respect that was shown to institutions, traditions and law enforcement on that day. Bill Clinton condemned the attack on the Capitol, the Constitution and the country as fueled by policies that for four years have deliberately spread misinformation, sowed distrust of the political system and pitted Americans against each other.

In connection with the events and three tweets from Donald Trump that were objected to by the social media platform Twitter , his Twitter account @realDonaldTrump was initially blocked for at least 12 hours. If the offending tweets are not deleted, the block would be permanent. Shortly afterwards, the platforms Facebook and Instagram announced that Trump's account would be banned for 24 hours.

International

The German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas expressed horror at the scenes and blamed Trump for the riots. "Insurgent words turn into violent acts," he commented on the events. Norbert Röttgen , Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Bundestag, saw the Republican Party at a crossroads. You must now choose between democracy and Trump. Even NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg expressed shock. The EU Foreign Affairs Representative Josep Borrell described the events as an "unprecedented attack on US democracy, its institutions and the rule of law".

French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed France's solidarity with the American people in a video message.
