Austin Bernard Vaughan

Austin Bernard Vaughan (born September 27, 1927 in New York City , † June 25, 2000 in Yonkers ) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in New York .

Life

Austin Bernard Vaughan studied Philosophy and Catholic Theology at St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . During this time Vaughan was an alumnus of the Pontifical North America College . He received on 8 December 1951, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

After ordination, Austin Bernard Vaughan briefly served as vicar of the Corpus Christi parish in Manhattan before continuing his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, where he received his doctorate in theology in 1954 . Returning to his homeland, Vaughan served as Vicar of the Queen of Peace parishes on Staten Island and St. John the Evangelist in Manhattan. He also taught French at the Cathedral Preparatory School . From 1956 to 1973 Austin Bernard Vaughan taught at St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers before becoming its rain .

On May 24, 1977 Pope Paul VI appointed him . the titular bishop of Cluain Iraird and auxiliary bishop in New York. The Archbishop of New York, Terence Cardinal Cooke , gave him on June 29 of that year in the St. Patrick's Cathedral , the episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were the Coadjutor Archbishop of New York, John Joseph Maguire , and the Auxiliary Bishop of New York, Patrick Vincent Ahern . Vaughan served as Episcopal Vicar for the Orange County region from 1979 . He was also pastor of St. Patrick's parish in Newburgh from 1979 to 1991 , where he founded a soup kitchen for the needy. Furthermore, from 1982 Vaughan was also episcopal vicar for prison chaplaincy .

Austin Bernard Vaughan was involved in the rights movement and was active in the organization Operation Rescue founded by pro-life activist Randall Terry . In 1988 Vaughan became the first American bishop to be sentenced to prison for barring access to an abortion clinic. He also publicly criticized the liberal abortion policy of the then governor of New York , Mario Cuomo .
