Emergence

After the release of their self-titled debut album in August 1998, the band toured practically without a break, according to singer Sully Erna . This is how the majority of the songs for their second album were created on tour while the band commuted between North America and Europe . For the recordings, the band converted an old warehouse into a makeshift studio instead of renting a studio. The band continues to work where they came from and what the band stands for. According to Erna, the new songs were rough and don't sound very polished. In addition to new songs, the band continued to work on older ideas. The songs Goin 'Down , Bad Magick and Vampires are originally from the time the debut album was recorded.

“Goin 'Down” was supposed to be used on the debut album, but was held back in favor of the song Whatever . Vampires is an instrumental title that Sully Erna later referred to as an accident. The song contains spoken excerpts from the documentary Mysterious Forces Beyond . The title The Journey is also an instrumental. The album was recorded in the Studio River's Edge Productions Inc. in Haverhill . In contrast to the debut album, the drums were recorded by Tommy Stewart. Stewart was a founding member of the band, but left Godsmack after a short time. When the first concerts began after the release of the debut album, he returned. Was produced Awake Sully Erna and Andrew Murdock. Katrina Chester can be heard as a gesture singer on the song Spiral . For the songs Awake , Greed and bad magic were music videos rotated. The album was released on Halloween .

With the theme song, Sully Erna processes the end of a relationship. He told MTV that he was only awake and could deal with all things. He used to always have the feeling that he could lose control without his former partner. Greed refers to a friend of the band who once loaned them $ 2,600 to allow Godsmack to record their first album. The band paid him back $ 10,000 in gratitude before his friend tried to sue the band. Spiral deals with the Wiccan movement's belief in reincarnation . Wicca believers could see things from past lives.

The songs Sick of Life and the theme song Awake were from the United States Navy as background music for the Accelerate Your Life - commercials used. According to Sully Erna, a Navy representative came up to the band and asked if the Navy could use these songs. The band was heavily criticized for this. The band's young fans could be influenced by the commercials to join the military. Sully Erna rejected this criticism and showed support for the army. However, he also pointed out that his band never endorsed any war . According to Sully Erna, Godsmack support “the women and men who fight for their country and their lives and protect freedom”.

The Japanese version of the album includes a bonus songs Why and Black Sabbath - cover Sweet Leaf .

She gave 8.5 out of ten points. Thorsten Zahn from the German Metal Hammer described the album as "an almost perfect example of the correct dosage instructions for a rock album: metallic hardness, alternative melodic structures and a lot of charisma from a real front man" and awarded six out of seven points. Greg Kot from Rolling Stone magazine commented negatively , who described the music on Awake as carefully calculated and the lyrics as clichéd inexorably dejected.
