When Legends Rise -

When Legends Rise is the seventh studio album by the American rock band Godsmack . It was published on April 27, 2018 via BMG Rights Management .

Emergence

In September 2016, Godsmack split from their long-time record label Republic Records and signed a new contract with BMG. A year later a new album was supposed to be released, but singer Sully Erna announced that the new studio album would not be released before 2018. The band aimed to coincide the new work with the 20th anniversary of the debut album All Wound Up . The band started songwriting in January 2017. According to Sully Erna, some of the new songs have a more commercial aspect than previous titles. It would have been 20 years since their debut album and a new generation would grow up that the band was only now discovering.

“We can still record the same album, but we would have the same result. We want to increase our fan base without alienating our core audience. "

- Sully Erna

Furthermore, Sully Erna described the album as a complete rebirth and a conscious decision to experiment and discover new sounds. Some of the new songs were created in a cappella versions, for which the music was later created. Some ideas developed after Sully Erna played the drums. With Under Your Scars Godsmack released the first ballad in the band's history. Sully Erna compared the song with classic rock ballads like Dream On by Aerosmith or November Rain by Guns n 'Roses . A total of 20 songs were written for the album, eleven of which were eventually used on the album.

The album was recorded in the fall of 2017 at the band's GSHQ headquarters in Derry . The album was produced by singer Sully Erna and Erik Ron, who previously worked with bands like Panic! at the disco or Saosin . Some of the songs were co-written by Erik Ron, Goldfinger singer John Feldmann, and Sevendust guitarist Clint Lowery . On the song Unforgettable some students from Derry Middle School appear as guest singers. Other guest musicians are the Bulgarians Irina Chirkova and Zvezdelina Haltakova, who play the cello and violin respectively on the song Under Your Scars .

For the song Bulletproof one was music video shot in which the singer Billy Ray Cyrus and Sebastian Bach (ex Skid Row ) and from the TV series Overhaulin ' Chris Jacobs known have a guest appearance. Additional music videos were created for the theme song, which features scenes from the NFL team New England Patriots , and for the song Unforgettable .

The title song When Legends Rise refers to the background of the band, which has existed since 1995. According to Sully Erna, the band has come an amazing journey with all its ups and downs and has overcome all difficult times through alcohol and egos . Erna compared the band to the mythological phoenix rising from the ashes. Bulletproof relates Sully Erna to his lyrics, in which he writes about things that affect him emotionally. Even if he was embarrassed about these things at times, it would be better to write about these things instead of keeping them to yourself and then experiencing even more pain. The carelessness of other people, some of whom make fun of Erna, would harden him.

Sully Erna wrote the text for Bulletproof after a relationship that shocked him. Unforgettable refers to the CATS organization that takes care of young people and is supported by Sully Erna. Under Your Scars refers to experiences from old relationships that people carry into new relationships and are initially reserved towards their new life partner. According to singer Sully Erna, it was unclear for a long time whether this song should be a rock song or a ballad.

Reviews

For Conny Schiffbauer from the German magazine Rock Hard , the “alternative hard rock battleship” Godsmack received “a sound-like spring cleaning, which is good for the whole work” thanks to the collaboration of the external songwriters. The title song and first single Bulletproof as earwigs . Since there are "a few average numbers" in the second half of the album, Schiffbauer gave "only" eight points, in general Godsmack went "on the right track with a broader songwriting ".

Matthias Weckmann from the German magazine Metal Hammer, on the other hand, criticized the fact that Godsmack's “ update of your art is certainly not every fan’s thing”. The “previous toxicity” of earlier albums, which arose because of the “clattering drums ”, would “go completely off” on When Legends Rise . Sully Erna would now sing in pitches that “ target a mainstream audience who knows rock tones from the kitchen radio”. The “basic essence would have stayed the same, but the packaging looks matt”, for which Weckmann awarded three out of seven points.

Chart placements

When Legends Rise debuted at number eight on the US and number six on the Canadian album charts. In both countries, the album was placed worse than its predecessor 1000hp . The singles Bulletproof , When Legends Rise , Under Your Scars and Unforgettable each reached number one on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs charts. This made Godsmack the fourth band to have four number one hits on a studio album. In contrast, the album achieved new top placements in German-speaking countries. In Germany the album landed at number 21, in Austria at number twelve and in Switzerland at number 28.
