1000hp is the sixth studio album by the American rock band Godsmack . It was released on August 5, 2014 in the US and September 1, 2014 in Europe via Spinefarm Records .

Emergence

After the release of the previous album The Oracle , a difficult phase began for the band. The band had problems with their record label and management, and was also in financial difficulties. According to singer Sully Erna , the bad mood spread to the band. Since the musicians felt "burned out and very unhappy" the band took a break. During this break, Erna, guitarist Tony Rombola and drummer Shannon Larkin worked on new material. After a long break, the musicians sat down and cleared the disputes out of the way.

Then the musicians played their ideas to their bandmates. The material was arranged together and text was provided before the songs were fine-tuned through joint jam sessions . The theme song, for example, was written in an hour and a half. It took the band five months to write the album. For the recordings, the musicians set up a recording studio in their hometown of Boston in an old factory hall, which is also to be used as a rehearsal room and material store. As with the previous album The Oracle , Dave Fortman was hired as co-producer who also did the mixing . Chris Decato ( keyboard ), Irina Chirkova ( cello with Something Different ) and Tim Theriault ( acoustic guitar with Generation Day ) performed as guest musicians . A music video was shot for the theme song .

According to Sully Erna, the album title should express strength and energy. First he had the idea of naming the album 10000hp (10,000 horsepower ). Since he couldn't sing the long number the way he wanted, the title 1000hp was ultimately chosen. The theme song is about the band themselves and describes the band's history and life in their hometown of Boston.

“Then I realized that our band itself also stands for this force. GODSMACK are like an incredibly fast racing car that always makes a great appearance and is energetic and powerful. "

- Sully Erna

Something Different is about a love relationship that was once good and suddenly turns into the opposite. With FML it comes to uses as a partner in a relationship his bad mood to spoil the mood of others in order to attain self-satisfaction. Livin 'in the Gray describes narrow-minded people who limit themselves to a few options in life and only think in black and white. At Life Is Good! The band invited 30 friends to the studio and had a party. Then the guests sang the background songs .

Reviews

Jörg Staude from the German magazine Rock Hard praised the band for the fact that they “ look more beyond the alternative metal plate rim” when it comes to their compositions and described 1000hp as “the best Godsmack album since Faceless ”. Staude rated the album with 8.5 out of ten points. Matthias Weckmann from the German magazine Metal Hammer praised the band, which makes the music a bit fresher and more enthusiastic than on the previous album. However, he also criticized Godsmack for once again resisting the temptation to reinvent himself. Weckmann awarded five out of seven points.

Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann from the German magazine Deaf Forever expressed himself more critically , who described the music at 1000hp as “polished beautiful weather rock”. The "once exciting combo" would have "gradually degenerated into junk food ". Since Mühlmann found it remarkable "how harmless a thousand horsepower can be", he awarded five out of ten points.

Chart placements

1000hp debuted at number three on the US album charts and sold around 58,000 times in the first week after its release in the US. This was a little more than half less than the previous album The Oracle , which sold around 117,000 copies in the first week. This broke the series of three number-one albums in a row for the band. In Germany the album reached number 66, in Austria number 62 and in Switzerland number 94.
