The non-profit community foundation Lebensraum Aachen was founded on June 17, 2005 with the aim of strengthening ties to the Aachen region. The community foundation , which initiates and promotes numerous projects under the motto … in love with the region , works on the basis of the basic features of a community foundation adopted at the 56th annual conference of the Federal Association of German Foundations in May 2000.
Foundation goals
The focus of the foundation's work is on actively helping to shape the living space in the Aachen region . Civic engagement is promoted and supported as an important resource for helping to shape the regional living environment. The non-denominational and cross-party foundation Lebensraum Aachen has set the following priorities for its work:

Projects of the community foundation Lebensraum Aachen
Tree of Life Project
With the dedication of a tree of life for newborn Aacheners, the foundation would like to strengthen the bond between the youngest residents and their families in the region in the long term. With the help of sponsors and the technical support of the Freundeskreis Botanischer Garten eV, more than 200 fruit trees - mostly old, regional varieties - have been planted and dedicated.
Brain exercises
The "brain gymnastics", initiated by Dieter HK Starke, offers older citizens the opportunity to train mental agility, concentration and logical thinking. The courses are held at regular intervals in senior centers and old people's homes.
Youth photo competition show me your city
In 2006 the foundation organized a youth photo competition. Young people between the ages of 14 and 18 were asked to present their view of the Aachen region in photographs and collages. The event and material prizes for the best individual and group work were provided by sponsors.
START project
The foundation participates in the nationwide START project of the non-profit Hertie Foundation . This project supports students from immigrant families who have achieved good to very good academic results and who actively participate in social life in the region. When awarding the scholarships, the family and economic situation will continue to be taken into account. The community foundation currently supports 11 high school students, for example with the financing of a PC workstation, on-site support and advice and with the provision of education money.
Aachen thermal water route
The Aachen thermal springs have disappeared more and more from the consciousness of Aachen residents and the cityscape, although the hot springs were one of the most important reasons why the Romans and later Charlemagne settled here. Since 2007, the members of the “Aachen Thermal Water Route” project group have wanted to draw attention to the importance of the springs and develop a thermal water route through Aachen city center and Burtscheid . Numerous modules have already been implemented for this purpose, such as B .:
- Installation of an interactive multimedia column with information on the Aachen thermal springs, the history of the spa and the use of thermal water
- Explanation of street names with reference to thermal springs through additional signs.

- Use of the former Fürstenbad from the destroyed Kaiserbad in the spa park terraces in Burtscheid
- Description of all Aachen and Burtscheider thermal springs in Wikipedia
- Development of the Aachen and Burtscheider thermal water cups in collaboration with the Raeren ceramist Ulrike Trommsdorff
- Development of a Klappmaul figure fountain spirit Granni in cooperation with the Stefan Wunsch (puppet theater Rose fish)
- Development of a thermal spring game in cooperation with the St. Ursula Gymnasium

Two interactive geocaching routes lead along the thermal water route in Aachen and in Burtscheid. The permanent marking of the hidden source points in the city and the establishment of a permanent exhibition on the subject of "Aachen thermal water and spa history" are further goals of the future work.
Grass sofas
On the initiative of the foundation, three-meter-long, eight-ton grass sofas have been built at various locations in Aachen, for example in the Rabental near Gut Melaten, in cooperation with the Freundeskreis Botanischer Garten eV. These “living” seating areas are intended to invite fellow citizens to linger and enjoy. The youngest sofa was erected on May 9, 2009 in Rabental as part of the action day of the ARD theme week “It's a matter of honor”. In October 2011 one of the grass sofas was renovated as part of the volunteer day.
Welcome to refugees
The Welcome for Refugees initiative was founded on December 13, 2014 . The community foundation has set itself the goal of supporting the 400 unaccompanied young people who have arrived in Aachen and contributing to their integration. To this end, we work with professional institutions such as the Center for Social Work Burtscheid , the Center for Child, Youth and Family Aid Maria im Tann and the Evangelical Child and Youth Aid in Brand . Projects such as the provision and repair of bicycles by volunteers were supported by the community foundation. In autumn 2015 she was a cooperation partner of the Helpfull Bags campaign . In addition, it supports excursions for international support classes, charity parties and legal advice for refugees . In its campaigns for the integration of refugees, the community foundation is supported by Aachen companies and institutions such as STAWAG , Zentis , the Grenzlandtheater , Vicariate General Aachen, the Lions and Rotary Club . In favor of the community foundation's welcome campaign, benefit concerts are held in Aachen, for example with the Sinfonietta Regio .
The choice is yours, every Ma (h) l - healthy nutrition for children
A project launched in 2015 is aimed at children of primary school age. With the support of a pedagogical specialist, the children should be trained in the responsible use of nutrition and their own nutritional decisions. The project is supported, among other things, by deposit vouchers from a REWE branch in Aachen .
Participation in regional actions
In addition, the foundation supported u. a. 2007 the children's and youth hotline Aachen with a donation.
As a co-initiator of the Aachen Volunteer Day 2007, 2009 and 2011, the community foundation works together with other charitable and voluntary organizations in the Aachen region to strengthen voluntary work and personal responsibility.
In 2012 the foundation supported the event series “250 Years of Casanova in Aachen” .
In 2013, together with the investor Norbert Hermanns, the foundation supported the construction of a media station at the newly built source house of the Rosenquelle in the spa gardens of Burtscheid . At the end of 2013 it became known that the community foundation would also work with Hermanns on the design of a memorial for the liberation bunker on Lousberg .
70 years of peace and freedom in Aachen
To commemorate the capitulation of Germany's first major city in World War II , the community foundation Lebensraum Aachen initiated a contemporary witness project. In addition to commemorative events commemorating this historic day, documentation in the form of a book 70 Years of Peace and Freedom in Aachen was created.
Open Aachen - Initiative for Democracy, Human Dignity and Diversity
In 2017, the foundation launched an initiative to strengthen democracy , the community of values and peaceful, respectful coexistence in the urban region. At the same time, the initiative takes a firm stand against hatred, intolerance, agitation and discrimination. The Offenes Aachen initiative sees itself as part of a nationwide network and cooperates with the Pulse of Europe initiative , which pursues the same goals in a European context. The initiative drafted the Aachen Declaration for Democracy in 2017 , which was signed by numerous Aachen organizations, institutions and companies.
Good thing
With the support of the Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and other local sponsors, the community foundation Lebensraum Aachen offers a nationwide qualification program for non-profit organizations that are looking for increased cooperation with companies and want to gain comprehensive qualifications.
Awards
Since the beginning of its existence, the foundation has been awarded the seal of approval for community foundations by the Federal Association of German Foundations. On May 10, 2007, the foundation was awarded a prize for good accountability. Brigitte Erm (Scala-Design) received the ENTERPREIS award in November 2007 for the voluntary support of the community foundation in the field of marketing and public relations. The chairman of the community foundation Lebensraum Aachen, Hans-Joachim Geupel, was awarded the Aachen Social Prize 2018 on June 12, 2018 for his many years of social commitment as part of the work of the community foundation .
At the end of May 2019, the community foundation's Open Aachen project was honored with a recognition award from the Active Citizenship Foundation from over 350 applications. In July 2019, Hans-Joachim Geupel accepted the German Founder Prize on behalf of the community foundation Lebensraum Aachen .
