The BMW Peugeot Citroën Electrification , BPC Electrification or with the official acronym bpce , was a Franco-German joint venture between the Bavarian BMW Group and the French PSA Peugeot Citroën . The letter of intent to found the joint venture was signed in October 2010. The final agreement was finally signed by Norbert Reithofer from BMW and Philippe Varin from the PSA Group on February 1, 2011. Both groups have a 50 percent share in the company. The company was officially incorporated on April 5, 2011. The registration took place under the Dutch corporate form of Besloten Vennootschap , a type of closed corporation .

BMW Group and PSA Peugeot Citroën planned to invest more than 100 million euros in the joint competence center for hybrid and electric drive technology. The research and development site in Munich started its work in October 2011 and production was scheduled to start in Mulhouse , Alsace , in 2015. Together, BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën wanted to create the first European open technology platform in the field of electrification of drive systems.

However, due to the partnership with General Motors concluded in February 2012 , Peugeot sought to exit from BPC Electrification after less than a year, whereupon bpce was dissolved on January 1, 2013.

history

The collaboration between the BMW Group and PSA Peugeot Citroën was based on a partnership in the field of drive technology that had existed for almost ten years. In the course of a partnership concluded in 2002, more than 1.8 million four-cylinder petrol engines have already been produced for Mini , Peugeot and Citroën models. In February 2010, the two groups agreed to continue this cooperation with the aim of jointly developing the new generation of these four-cylinder gasoline engines. The joint venture should accelerate the standardization of components in the area of hybrid components, which should lead to significant economies of scale in purchasing and production.

The start of the joint venture created a prerequisite for the implementation of the jointly agreed goals, in which the production of hybrid components for the electrification of models of both companies should begin in 2015.

construction

The research and development site in Munich started work in October 2011. At the beginning of 2012, around 400 people were already employed there. In addition, BPC Electrification planned to hire around 200 new, highly qualified employees in 2012 in research and development. The production of components for the electrification of models from both companies should start in 2015 in Mulhouse, France. At the Mulhouse location, a forecast initial volume of approx. 10,000 vehicles p. a. In a first step in production, up to 250 new jobs were created.

BPC Electrification was a strategically designed, long-term project that was intended to achieve economies of scale in production and purchasing as well as significant synergies and cost savings in research and development. BPC Electrification wanted to use these effects to increase its development and innovation strength and to minimize the time to market launch of its products. BPC Electrification acted along the entire value chain, starting with pre-development up to production and reserved the right to make its marketable components available to third parties. BPC Electrification made use of the know-how and competence of the established and proven suppliers and production networks of the BMW Group and the PSA Peugeot Citroën Group.
