The name, format and mode of the tournament changed almost annually. In its first edition in 2008, the tournament was called NetJets Showdown and with Roger Federer and Pete Sampras was a show match between players from different generations of players. 2009-10 the tournament was held under the name Billie Jean King Cup in honor of the former US tennis player Billie Jean King ; the four winners of the Grand Slam tournaments of the previous year were invited. In the semifinals, only one winning set was played (and without a debut), but the final was played in the classic best-of-three format.
Since 2011 the tournament has been held under the name BNP Paribas Showdown ; In contrast to the previous year, no women were invited to the 2011 event, but instead with Ivan Lendl , John McEnroe , Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras legends of American men's tennis, the mode, however, was the same as in the two previous years. From 2012 to 2016 there was a women's and a men's match. In the final year of the event, a world selection led by Captain Lleyton Hewitt played against an American selection led by Andy Roddick . The tournament was discontinued after sponsor BNP Paribas withdrew .
