Career

At the age of eight, Samantha Stosur received a tennis racket for Christmas, and at 13 she was already taking part in the junior world championships in Jakarta . 2005 and 2006

At a young age, Stosur mainly appeared as a dual specialist. In 2005, she won alongside Scott Draper in the final of the mixed competition at the Australian Open in the tie-break of the third set against Liezel Huber and Kevin Ullyett . In the same year, she and Lisa Raymond won the women's doubles competition at the US Open in the final against Jelena Dementjewa and Flavia Pennetta and the WTA Championships 2005 in Los Angeles after defeating Cara Black and Rennae Stubbs . In 2006 there was a new edition of the finals at the annual tournament of the best in Madrid , from which Stosur and Raymond emerged as winners again. Together with the American, she stood in four other Grand Slam finals up to 2008, of which they could only prevail in the final of the French Open 2006 against Daniela Hantuchová and Ai Sugiyama . Together, the duo won twenty finals, including matches at major Tier I tournaments such as Moscow , Charleston and Berlin . In 2007 they each defended their titles in Tokyo , Indian Wells , Miami . The victory at the English lawn tournament in Eastbourne 2008 was their last joint title so far. In February 2006 she was ranked number one in the world doubles for the first time . In total, she was at the head of the field for 62 weeks before she was replaced by her partner Lisa Raymond in April 2007.

In the singles, Stosur first made people sit up and take notice at the beginning of 2005 when, equipped with a wildcard, she reached the finals of Gold Coast and Sydney one after the other , but there lost to Patty Schnyder and Alicia Molik , respectively . In the following year she could not defend these results, but received a wildcard for the Australian Open . There she moved into the round of 16 for the first time, in which she was defeated by Martina Hingis 1: 6, 6: 7 (6: 8). At the WTA tournament in Tokyo , she lost the quarter-finals against Maria Sharapova . In Miami she went down in the singles against the world number one Amélie Mauresmo with 0: 6 and 0: 6. In Prague she reached the final, which she lost in three sets. At the French Open it set a first round defeat against Ana Ivanović .

At Wimbledon , Stosur met Mauresmo again in round two and this time lost 4: 6, 2: 6. In the second round of Los Angeles , she defeated Lindsay Davenport for the first time, a top ten player, but lost to Jelena Janković in round three . Two weeks later in New Haven , she came as a lucky loser to the semifinals, in which she was again defeated by Davenport.

The European indoor season started Stosur at the tournament in Luxembourg , where she was eliminated in round two against Jelena Dementjewa. In Stuttgart an opening defeat in singles was followed by a double title with Raymond, as well as in Linz and in the last tournament of the year in Hasselt, Belgium .

2007 to 2009

After a moderate start into the new season, the first symptoms of Lyme borreliosis caused by a tick bite showed at the French Open at Stosur . At Wimbledon she lost in the first round, the US hard court season was then accompanied by many cancellations. After the US Open , she ended the season prematurely.

After recovering from illness, she played two ITF tournaments in April 2008 ( Dothan , Charlottesville ). In her first WTA tournament in Rome, she lost to Venus Williams in round two. At Wimbledon , she won her second Grand Slam mixed title alongside Bob Bryan . In the final, they beat Katarina Srebotnik and Mike Bryan in straight sets.

In 2009 Stosur fought its way back to the top of the world. At the Australian Open she reached the third round, in which she was defeated by number four seeded Jelena Dementjewa. In Miami she reached the quarterfinals after victories over Sybille Bammer , Dinara Safina and Amélie Mauresmo, but then failed against the eventual winner Wiktoryja Asaranka . With the semi-finals at the French Open , she achieved her best individual result so far in a Grand Slam tournament; she lost there with Svetlana Kuznetsova again to the eventual winner. At Wimbledon she only reached the third round, but then stood in the double-finals with her compatriot Rennae Stubbs , which they lost to Serena and Venus Williams . In WTA Osaka , Stosur won her first WTA individual title on October 18 when she defeated Francesca Schiavone 7: 5, 6: 1 in the final of the HP Open .

2010

At the Australian Open , Stosur was eliminated in the round of 16 against world number one Serena Williams, who later also secured the title. In the Fed Cup, the Australian team was promoted to relegation by defeating Spain . Shortly afterwards, Stosur failed in the first round of Dubai against Tathiana Garbin .

In March she played at the big tournaments in Indian Wells , where she lost in the semifinals to the eventual winner Jelena Janković, and in Miami , where she was defeated in the quarterfinals by Kim Clijsters , who then also won the tournament. In doubles, she moved into the final with Nadja Petrowa at both WTA tournaments. On April 18, Stosur won her second WTA individual title at the Family Circle Cup . She gave up only one set in the entire tournament and prevailed in the final against Wera Swonarewa 6: 0, 6: 3. In the second round of the Fed Cup, the Australians returned to the first world group for a long time with an undisputed victory over the Ukraine team.

In May Stosur reached the final in Stuttgart , which she lost to Justine Henin in three sets. After an injury-related cancellation, she reached the quarter-finals in Madrid (loss to Venus Williams). At the French Open she started as the best clay court player of the season with a record of 14-2 wins as a co-favorite. After victories over Simona Halep , De Los Rios and Piwowarowa, she advanced to the round of 16; There, as in Stuttgart, she met Justine Henin and after losing the first set she got the upper hand this time (2: 6, 6: 1 and 6: 4). In the quarter-finals she defeated Serena Williams 6: 2, 6: 7 and 8: 6; She was the dominant player for one and a half sentences, served to win the match at 5: 3 in the second set and even had to fend off a match point at 5: 6 in the third set. In the semifinals against Jelena Janković, she was focused from the start and turned her first match point to 6: 1 and 6: 2 after just an hour. She lost the final against Francesca Schiavone on June 5, 2010 4: 6, 6: 7 (2: 7).

At the US Open, Stosur had difficulties starting again. Against Jelena Wesnina she was able to avert the end in the second set at 3: 6, 7: 6 and 6: 1, in the second round she defeated her compatriot Anastassija Rodionova 6: 3, 6: 4. After beating Sara Errani (6: 2, 6: 3), she met Jelena Dementjewa in the round of 16, against whom she narrowly prevailed with 6: 3, 2: 6 and 7: 6 and thus for the first time in the US quarter-finals Open reached. There she met the favored Kim Clijsters in occasional irregular conditions (strong gusts of wind due to hurricane "Earl"), to whom she lost 4: 6, 7: 5 and 3: 6 in the end.

2011 and 2012

After their third round defeat in Melbourne , the Grand Slam tournament in Paris against Gisela Dulko also ended in round three. Nevertheless, in February 2011 she reached fourth place in the women's world rankings. In between, she was in the final at the clay court tournament in Rome , which she lost to Sharapova 2: 6, 4: 6. At the Eastbourne grass tournament, Stosur made it to the semi-finals, which she lost in extremely windy conditions against future tournament winner Marion Bartoli . At Wimbledon , she failed in the first round. With her new doubles partner Sabine Lisicki , at whose side she had already won the Stuttgart tournament in April, she made it to the finals again in London . They were defeated by the pairing Květa Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik, however, with 3: 6 and 1: 6.

At the start of the hard court season, Stosur lost to her doubles partner Lisicki in two sets in the round of 16 at Stanford . Things went better in Toronto , where she was able to reach a final again after a long dry spell. She lost the final against a resurgent Serena Williams with 4: 6 and 2: 6. Stosur achieved her greatest success to date at the US Open , when she celebrated her first individual Grand Slam title with a 6: 2, 6: 3 final win over Serena Williams.

To the disappointment of their fans, the Australian Open ended in 2012 in round one against Sorana Cîrstea . At the clay court tournament in Charleston , she advanced to the semi-finals, in which she was defeated by the eventual winner Serena Williams. At the Fed Cup match in April against the German team , she won both singles against Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petković . At the WTA tournament in Stuttgart she reached the quarter-finals, in which the later tournament winner Sharapova prevailed.

In May in Madrid she was eliminated in the quarterfinals against qualifier Lucie Hradecká . At the French Open , she played with convincing victories (including 6: 4, 6: 1 in the quarter-finals over Dominika Cibulková ) up to the semi-finals, in which she was defeated by Sara Errani 5: 7, 6: 1 and 3: 6. At Wimbledon, she failed in round two to Arantxa Rus . As the defending champion, she was eliminated from the US Open in the quarter-finals against Viktoria Asaranka.

2013 to 2016

Following another early failure at the Australian Open , she made it to the quarter-finals in Indian Wells , where she withdrew from her game against Angelique Kerber due to a calf injury that she suffered in the previous round. The clay court season was subsequently disappointing. The Australian only reached the round of the last eight in Rome , at the French Open she was eliminated in the third round, as she did in Stuttgart against Jelena Janković. Since she could not defend the points from the previous season, Stosur fell out of the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time since 2010. After another early defeat at Wimbledon against the future finalist Sabine Lisicki, she reported back with a triumph at the Southern California Open 2013 in Carlsbad , where after eight unsuccessful encounters she was able to record her only victory to date against Wiktoryja Asaranka in the final. At the subsequent US Open , however, she failed in her opening game against the American qualifier Victoria Duval . After winning the tournament in Osaka , she was able to qualify for the International Tournament of Champions 2013 in Sofia, but was defeated there in the final as well as in the final of the Kremlin Cup to Simona Halep.

The 2014 season was also disappointing for the Australian, especially at the Grand Slam tournaments. So she only managed to reach the fourth round at the French Open , where she lost after a clear lead in three sets against Maria Sharapova and had to accept her 14th defeat in the 16th meeting against the Russian. At the Australian Open , she was eliminated in the third round, at the US Open in the second round. At Wimbledon , she failed in the first match against Yanina Wickmayer. However, she was able to win the mixed competition there alongside Nenad Zimonjić for the second time since 2008. Stosur achieved her best individual results at the end of the year. She was in the semi-finals of the Premier Mandatory tournament in Beijing , which she lost to Petra Kvitová , and defended her title in Osaka without losing a set.

From 2015, the Australian's focus shifted more and more to smaller tournaments due to poor results at major events. She only reached the fourth round at the US Open , but lost to the eventual winner Flavia Pennetta as in the seven previous matches. On clay she won titles in Strasbourg and Bad Gastein after victories against Kristina Mladenovic and Karin Knapp . At the Citi Open in Washington , she was the seventh active player at the time to record her 500th victory in singles.

In 2016, Stosur once again managed to qualify for the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament at the French Open when, in adverse external conditions, she prevailed against Simona Halep, among others, who was still clear for the clash of the two in the semifinals in Madrid could decide. Despite this success, she did not get past the second round in both Wimbledon and the US Open . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she had to admit defeat to Angelique Kerber in the round of 16. In mixed doubles she competed with John Peers , but the two failed in the first match at the Indian doubles Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna .

Since 2017

The year 2017 began for Stosur with three first-round bankruptcies in Australia and nine defeats in a row across all seasons. On the clay court, however, she fought back in shape and won the WTA tournament in Strasbourg for the second time in the final against her compatriot Daria Gavrilova . At the following French Open , she achieved her best Grand Slam result of the year with the fourth round, but lost there against the eventual winner Jeļena Ostapenko . Due to a stress fracture in her hand, she had to cancel her participation in Wimbledon and the US Open and did not return to the WTA Tour until the end of the season at the tournaments in Asia. In addition, she lost her position as the best placed Australian tennis player to Daria Gavrilova.

After consistently average results and reaching a single semi-final at the lawn tournament in Mallorca , Stosur left the top 50 in the world rankings in 2018 after ten years. Only in doubles was she able to win another WTA title alongside Zhang Shuai in Hong Kong after a five-year break. The two also competed in doubles at the Australian Open and prevailed there in the final against Kristina Mladenovic and Tímea Babos, who were seeded first . For Stosur, who last won the French Open final in 2006, it was after the third Grand Slam title in women's doubles and the first triumph in the final of a Grand Slam since winning the mixed competition at Wimbledon in 2014. In the singles, however, she survived In 2019 the first round of the Grand Slam tournaments only in Paris . In Guangzhou she was able to reach the 25th WTA final of her career, but was defeated there by Sofia Kenin in three sets. Despite falling performances, Stosur ended the tennis year in the top 100 in the world for the 16th time in a row in 2019, only Serena Williams has an even longer duration of all active players.

Because of her many years of service to the Australian Fed Cup team, for which she has appeared a total of 31 times since 2003, Stosur received the Fed Cup Award of the ITF and the International Tennis Hall of Fame as part of the Fed Cup Final 2019 Excellence awarded. In the final itself she was only used in doubles, where she was defeated by the French doubles Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia alongside world number one Ashleigh Barty . For Stosur it was the first and so far only defeat in a Fed Cup double.

Private

In June 2020, Stosur, who lives in a same-sex relationship, became the mother of a girl. The child was carried by her partner Liz Astling.

Play style

Sam Stosur plays a two-handed backhand. Here she uses the slice very often, especially in comparison to other WTA players. Another special feature is her kick serve, which has a strong sideways twist, which also distinguishes her from many players in the top 100.
