Babbel is a paid e-learning platform for web-based learning in 14 languages ​​(currently): Danish , German , English , French , Italian , Indonesian , Dutch , Norwegian ( Bokmål ), Polish , Portuguese , Russian , Swedish , Spanish , Turkish .

Babbel is a product of Lesson Nine GmbH from Berlin . The company was founded in August 2007. In January 2008 Babbel went online as a free beta version. In the same year, Kizoo Technology Ventures and IBB Beteiligungsgesellschaft invested in the company. In 2009, one million euros followed from the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union . In March 2013, Babbel bought PlaySay from San Francisco to enter the US market. That same month, the company closed its $ 10 million Series B funding round , led by Reed Elsevier Ventures. In February 2016, Babbel reported 1 million active, paying users. The company employs 450 people, has its headquarters in Berlin-Mitte and a location in New York . In 2017, Babbel expanded its business model with a customized app for corporate customers.

Learning approach

Babbel offers learning courses that are created by linguists and teachers, taking into account the individual language combinations of the users. It is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (GER). Using short thematic blocks, exercises on grammar and vocabulary are offered and thus language skills (reading, writing, listening comprehension and speaking) are taught. The learning progress is saved in the cloud so that you can continue learning at any time.

In 2016, the company received the “CSR Jobs Award 2016” and “Fast Company Magazine” was awarded first place as the most innovative company in the education sector. This was followed in 2015 by an award from the Google Play Store in the “Best of 2015” category. The 2014 awards were preceded by “Best of Mobile” and “The European 2014”.
