List of grape varieties

Baco Blanc is a white wine variety . It was mainly used as a wine grape and for the production of raisins .

ancestry

It is a new breed between Folle Blanche x Noah ; due to the proportion of the Noah variety, it is an interspecific variety. The crossing of the hybrid vine took place in 1898 by the French Rebzüchter François Baco .

distribution

Until the beginning of the 1970s it was the main component of the Armagnac brandy and was then replaced by the Ugni Blanc grape variety through the general EU ban on hybrid vines . It has been severely cleared since then and was only officially approved until the end of 2010. After 24,427 hectares of vineyards were raised in the survey in 1958, according to the last survey by ONIVINS in 2007 there were only 827 hectares that were planted with Baco Blanc in southwest France.

The American viticulture pioneer and newspaper editor Philip Wagner imported some of the grape varieties bred by François Baco and sold Baco Blanc very successfully to wine-growing regions on the east coast of the USA. They are also found in Canada and New Zealand .

According to a decree of April 18, 2008, the grape variety is again one of the officially approved grape varieties for commercial cultivation, since the genome of the plant contains parts of the noble grape Vitis vinifera (from the cross-breeding partner Folle Blanche ).

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

  • The shoot tip is open. It is very hairy white wool with a very slight reddish tinge. The yellowish young leaves are hairy with fine flames.
  • The dark green leaves are usually three-lobed and only slightly curved. The stem bay is open in a V-shape. The leaf margin is serrated with large B teeth. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium-sized and has loose berries. The round berries are medium-sized and golden-yellow in color. The berries have the typical Fox tone of the hybrid vines.

Maturity: Baco Blanc ripens approx. 20 days after the Gutedel and is one of the grape varieties of the second ripening period (see the chapter in the article Grape variety).

properties

It is prone to phytoplasm contamination . The phytoplasm infestation leads to yellowing diseases such as golden yellow yellowing ( French : Flavescence dorée ) or blackwood disease .
