The Mellingen Heitersberg station was opened on December 12 of 2004. It replaced the Mellingen station on the former national railway line , which was closed at the same time. It is located in the municipality of Mellingen in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland .

history

During the construction of the Heitersberg route , which was opened in 1975, a stop was planned at the western portal of the Heitersberg tunnel . But it would take almost 30 years for the station to become a reality. In December 2001 the Aargau building director Peter C. Beyeler presented the concept, which was neither politically secured nor financed. The S3 is supposed to serve the new Mellingen Heitersberg stop every hour. At that time , the SBB categorically ruled out a half-hourly service because a stopping train on this bottleneck needed several routes . In autumn 2002, the Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau approved the concept and approved the necessary loans. The new stop will enable the canton to shut down the Mellingen – Baden national railway section. The construction of the stop was part of the major Rail 2000 project .

Construction work began on September 26, 2003, including the adaptation of the main road Fislisbach – Mellingen, which was provided with a roundabout for access to the bus station and the parking garage. A signal-controlled entry into the same street was created for the Postbus to exit . At that time, 2,500 to 3,500 people were expected to get on and off the bus per day. The 14 neighboring communities, the canton and the SBB shared the costs of 13.9 million.

For the opening, the municipalities in the catchment area came up with something special by arriving at the train station with the first S-Bahn from Aarau at 05:33 to take place the official opening at 05:45. The residents of the surrounding communities were invited to this maiden voyage. The festivities surrounding the opening then took place at the old Mellingen train station, where the Re 460 016 was christened “Rohrdorferberg Reussal” on this occasion .

One year after it opened, the canton of Aargau published its usage figures for the first time: around 2,200 people got on or off on working days, and the trend is rising. If two trains run every hour during rush hour, 300 to 400 people get on or off every hour. During the day the value fell to around 50 people per hour. In comparison, the old Mellingen train station was only frequented by a few dozen travelers every day, according to SBB statistics from 2003.

A census by the canton on May 12, 2009 identified 3,042 people who got on or off. This means that the number of passengers has increased by 76% in four years. Compared to 2007 there was an increase of 18%. The increase in travelers was confirmed by another count in 2013, with a total of 3309 people getting on or off. Due to its location outside of residential areas, most commuters use the bus to reach the train station. The parking garage is also well used with 80%.

The stop has therefore become an important location factor for the region within a very short time. The number of inhabitants in Mellingen increased by 400 between 2004 and 2013. The growth figures are even clearer in Niederrohrdorf, where an additional 900 people have settled in the same period, bringing the number of inhabitants to 3600.

The station has two tracks with outside locks that are over 300 meters long. They are accessed through an underpass with stairs and ramps. Affiliated is the bus station with six retaining edges as well as a three-story Park + Rail car park with 165 parking spaces and a Coop Pronto with petrol station.

Mellingen Heitersberg was served hourly by the Zurich S3 ( Aarau - Dietikon - Zurich HB - Effretikon - Wetzikon ) until the timetable change in December 2017. In addition, the S42 ( Muri - Dietikon - Zurich Altstetten - Zurich HB) ran during rush hour, which resulted in a half-hourly service. Since December 2017, the S3 has been running every 30 minutes during rush hour. Since then, the S42 has not stopped. There was resistance among commuters, and a petition demanded that the stop be maintained. On December 9, 2018, the S3 was replaced by the S11 according to the new concept of the 4th partial expansion of the Zurich S-Bahn. To do this, adjustments first had to be made at Othmarsingen (in 2016) and Mägenwil (in 2017) stations so that 300-meter-long trains can stop there too. The all-day half-hourly service on the S11 is expected to be introduced from December 2021.

Mellingen Heitersberg train station plays a special role as a hub for bus traffic. No fewer than six postbus lines connect it with various destinations in the Rohrdorferberg-Reuss Valley region, which run at frequent intervals, especially during rush hour. The Postbus destinations are Baden , Widen , Bremgarten , Mägenwil , the Baden Cantonal Hospital , Wohlen via Stetten and Brugg . Mellingen Heitersberg train station has a mobility car sharing service.
