The Altshausen – Schwackenreute railway line has been dismantled since 1987 between Pfullendorf and Schwackenreute. It connects the Altshausen community on the Herbertingen – Isny railway line with the city of Pfullendorf and used to lead to Schwackenreute on the Hegau-Ablachtal railway , which is now incorporated into Mühlingen . Since 2019 it has also been called the “ robber train ”.

history

The western part of the route from Schwackenreute to Pfullendorf was opened by the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways on August 11, 1873. On August 14, 1875, the Royal Württemberg State Railways extended the route to Altshausen.

The German Federal Railways introduced on 26 September 1971, passenger traffic on the entire route, so that the route only in the freight was served. On May 29, 1983, the Deutsche Bundesbahn also stopped freight traffic on the western section between Schwackenreute and Pfullendorf and dismantled this section at the end of 1987.

On the eastern section between Pfullendorf and Altshausen there was significant freight traffic until July 2002, among other things, a large kitchen manufacturer in Pfullendorf with its own container terminal ensured a comparatively high volume of traffic for years. The formal closure of this section took place on August 31, 2004, but the tracks were not dismantled because this section of the route was leased by a municipal interest group from 2004 onwards. Only the track infrastructure of the Pfullendorf train station was dismantled in summer 2009; Since then, the line from Altshausen has ended at a buffer stop in front of the former train station .

Reactivation and younger development

At the instigation of the city of Pfullendorf and the municipality of Ostrach , the preserved 25-kilometer section between Altshausen and Pfullendorf was reactivated for passenger traffic in 2009. The town of Pfullendorf is the railway infrastructure company on the route, which is now used as a public railway for freight and passenger traffic. On July 31, 2009 and August 1, 2009, several special bicycle trains were the first scheduled trains to travel to Pfullendorf.

After successful public special trips on September 12, 2010 and December 11, 2010 between Aulendorf and Pfullendorf, regular excursion traffic was started in 2011: The "Radexpress Oberschwaben" now runs from May to October on all Sundays and public holidays between Pfullendorf and Aulendorf with stops in Altshausen, Hoßkirch Königseggsee (since 2019), Ostrach and Burgweiler. This means that for the first time in decades, scheduled passenger transport is offered on the route. A simple platform was created for this at the end point at the Stadtgarten in Pfullendorf .

As the “Regional Public Railway of the City of Pfullendorf”, the railway line is available to all railway companies without discrimination. It can be driven on at a maximum speed of 50 km / h. In Altshausen station there are side tracks and a loading road with a connection to the Herbertingen – Isny railway line belonging to DB Netz AG , in Ostrach there are various side tracks and a head ramp and in Burgweiler there has been a storage area with loading options on the main track since 2017; since 2020 there has been a connection to the private infrastructure of the former container terminal in Pfullendorf (as a “rail port” for rail / road transhipment). In addition, an external logistics company intends to create a new container handling terminal in Ostrach.

Lattice bridge in Ostrach over the Ostrach

In the summer of 2015, the municipalities of Pfullendorf, Ostrach and Altshausen bought the railway line from DB Netz AG for 300,000 euros. The purchase price was divided in the ratio 37.5: 37.5: 25 percent. More than half of the 25 kilometers of the route run in the Ostrach district.

Scheduled freight traffic has been taking place on the route again since 2017, mainly with wooden trains to / from Burgweiler and Altshausen, but also with artificial fertilizer trains.

The route for excursion passenger transport has been expanded since 2018: the stops have been upgraded in terms of tourism, a new stop at the seaside resort was set up in Hoßkirch in 2019 (Hoßkirch Königseggsee), the barrier systems at the level crossings were put back into operation, the cycling days of the Radexpress Oberschwaben (currently always sunny - and public holidays from May 1st to October) and established tourist support programs. The concept of the route, which has since been marketed as the “robber train”, was honored in 2019 with two innovation prizes from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport and the Bodensee Tourism Association. Over 5,000 passengers use the excursion trains each season.

The former container terminal in Pfullendorf has also been accessible again since 2020. From 1970 to 2002, the company existed on the former grounds Alno first a siding and later a container terminal with headshunt and six sidings, but without Umfahrmöglickeit. The tracks were not dismantled after they were closed. The site was sold to Holzwerke Rückerl, which has been making parts of the facility available for cargo handling again since the beginning of 2020. Goods / container handling is again possible on the facility, which is now known as the "Rail Port". Due to the lack of a bypass (previously the Pfullendorf station, which no longer exists today, was used for this purpose), from the last station with a bypass (Burgweiler) you have to push or drive with a sandwich covering.
