The Lottengrün – Plauen line was a branch line in Saxony . It began in Lottengrün station on the Herlasgrün – Oelsnitz railway line and led to Plauen . There was a connection to the Elstertalbahn (Gera – Weischlitz).

history

In 1897 the owners of the Theuma slate quarries requested a rail connection to the Herlasgrün – Oelsnitz line in Lottengrün for the first time. In 1901 the first preparatory work for a Lottengrün – Theuma industrial railway took place. On July 7, 1902, the 3 km long freight line was approved and a little later built in the simplest possible way. On December 15, 1903, the route, which was only used for freight traffic, was inaugurated. In the Saxon route scheme, the connection was given the abbreviation LT.

Kleinfriesen viaduct

However, the communities between Falkenstein and Plauen soon demanded that the route be continued to Plauen. With Decree No. 38 of 1910, the route was licensed by the Saxon state parliament, provided that the municipalities and other owners on the route provide the required land free of charge. There was still a dispute about the planned end point in Plauen. Due to the enormous height difference from the Elstertal to the upper station, a route there was not very realistic, so that the lower station was set as the end point. The integration into the Elstertalbahn was then planned in Plauen-Chrieschwitz, from there to Plauen und Bf the Elstertalbahn was to be expanded to double-track for the additional traffic.

The first preparatory work began in 1912/13. On October 5, 1914, the actual construction work began on the line, which progressed only slowly because the First World War had broken out. The opening of the new line was originally planned for October 1, 1916; from November 15, 1917, only freight trains ran between Lottengrün and Großfriesen.

The work on the remaining section to Plauen was delayed more and more. Due to increased wages and material costs, the originally planned budget of 2.08 million marks had already been exceeded by far. It was not until May 30, 1923 that the completely new line could be opened with a ceremony. On June 1, 1923, the scheduled passenger and freight traffic was started on the entire route.

In 1970 the Reichsbahndirektion Dresden decided to close the line. The last passenger trains left on September 26, 1970. Freight traffic was maintained until autumn 1972 to service the Theuma slate quarries. The track dismantling began at the end of 1972 and was completed by 1974.

Route description

Route

Starting from Lottengrün station, the route to Plauen branched off the Herlasgrün – Oelsnitz railway to the north-west. It led past the Theuma slate quarry and affected the place of the same name in the west. Now it continued to the northwest and touched Großfriesen and Neuensalz on the outskirts. From Neuensalz the railway line ran west. First of all, today's federal motorway 72 was crossed over a bridge . In Kleinfriesen, the railway line led north, where in Chrieschwitz it joined the Gera Süd – Weischlitz railway line in a curve and now ran on two tracks to Plauen (Vogtl) train station .

Operating points

Lottengrün

Location of the former Lottengrün station (2018), now a cycle path

The Lottengrün station was built around 1869 from an applied here water station at the herlasgrün-oelsnitz railway . Initially expanded to a freight loading point, from 1879 passenger traffic was also carried out. In addition, from 1902 an industrial line branched off here to the Theuma slate quarries, which was later extended as a public railway line to Plauen. In 1951, the Lottengrün – Oelsnitz section was dismantled due to the low volume of traffic. On September 26, 1970, passenger traffic ended on the Falkenstein (Vogtl) –Lottengrün section and the Lottengrün – Plauen railway line. After the operation of the Theuma slate quarries on the railroad was stopped in the autumn of 1972, the now Lottengrün freight yard went out of service on October 1st, 1972. The station building in the east of Lottengrün has been preserved to this day.

Theuma Ldst

Former loading point Theuma (2018)

Theuma Ldst was put into operation on December 15, 1903 as a loading station for the Theuma slate quarries. With the opening of the entire route and the inauguration of the freight station in the west of Theuma, the loading point south of the village was closed on June 1, 1923. It was located in the area of the Theuma natural stone factory, which is still in operation today.

Theuma

Former Theuma stop (2018)

The Theuma stop was opened as a freight station on November 15, 1917 and dedicated to the station in 1923. The station is therefore younger than the Theuma charging point . In 1964 it was downgraded to a stop and, with the cessation of passenger traffic on September 27, 1970, it was dedicated to a loading point. On May 1, 1971, the station went out of service. Of the high-rise buildings of the station, only the house remained. A playground was created on the area to the west of Theuma in the area of the streets “Am Sportplatz” / “Lindenstraße”.

Large Frisians

The Großfriesen stop was opened as a train station on June 1, 1923 and downgraded to a stop in 1933. The station was located in the southeast of Großfriesen . With the cessation of passenger traffic on September 27, 1970, it was rededicated as a loading point until it went out of service on May 1, 1971. The area was built over with a warehouse in 1981, only the residential building is still preserved.

Plauen (Vogtl) small friezes

Location of the former stop Plauen (Vogtl) -Kleinfriesen (2018)

The Plauen (Vogtl) -Kleinfriesen stop was opened as a train station on June 1, 1923 and downgraded to a stop in 1933. The station was in the north of Kleinfriesen . It went out of service with the closure of the railway line on September 27, 1970. While the house has been preserved to this day, the reception building no longer exists. Today there is a warehouse on the area of the stop. The following route in the direction of Plauen (Vogtl) Chrieschwitz is now overbuilt by the four-lane federal highway 173 . Furthermore, in Kleinfriesen, the street “Am Alten Bahndamm” is reminiscent of the railway line.

Plauen (Vogtl) -Chrieschwitz

Reception building of the Plauen (Vogtl) Chrieschwitz train station

The Plauen (Vogtl) Chrieschwitz station was opened on June 1, 1923 with the inauguration of the Lottengrün – Plauen line that joins the Gera Süd – Weischlitz line. This line, which opens in front of the station from the east, was subsequently expanded to double-track as far as the Plauen (Vogtl) station and Bf . In 1946 the second track was dismantled as a reparation payment. At the beginning of 1970 the line to Lottengrün was shut down and dismantled. A pallet station was set up on the vacated area in the course of the development of the Plauen- Chrieschwitz prefabricated building area. Furthermore, some industrial companies were connected to the station with tracks, of which only one steel construction company is regularly served today.

After the dismantling of the station, only one continuous track has been available since 2004. In this context, the station was downgraded to a stop. The bridge over the station, built in 1984, had to be closed in 2006 due to the dilapidated condition of the structure. Since the platforms of the stop can only be reached via these, the closure of the bridge was accompanied by the abandonment of the stop.
