The Lučenec – Utekáč line is a branch line in the south-center of Slovakia , in the Okresy Lučenec and Poltár . It runs from the town of Lučenec in the southern Slovakian basin via Poltár on the Ipe Fluss river before reaching Utekáč in the middle of the Veporské vrchy (part of the Slovak Ore Mountains ).

history

The concession to build a railway line, still in the Kingdom of Hungary , from Lučenec to Poltár was awarded to Armin Pallós from Budapest in 1900. This 18.4 km long railway line with the branch from Breznička to Katarínska Huta was opened on November 24, 1901. In 1906 and 1908 the concession was changed to allow continuation to Kokava nad Rimavicou or Utekáč (at that time part of the first named place, independent since 1993). The 17.1 km long section to Kokava was opened on November 27, 1908 and the short (6 km) extension to Utekáč and the glassworks there on December 16, 1909. The railway was built to connect the glassworks and local ceramic manufacturers to the network.

Passenger traffic ceased on February 2, 2003, but resumed on June 15, 2003. Freight traffic is still taking place, but has declined due to closings of the glassworks in Utekáč and Zlatno.
