The Pirna – Coswig line is a double-track electrified main line in Saxony , which mainly serves the Dresden S-Bahn . It runs on the same track body parallel to the existing main lines Děčín – Dresden and Dresden – Leipzig . The section between Pirna and Dresden -Neustadt has been in operation since 2004, the overall project was completed in March 2016 with the completion of the remaining Dresden-Neustadt-Coswig line.

history

prehistory

Pirna – Dresden

S-Bahn near Dresden-Dobritz in 1991. The trackless and overgrown subgrade to the right of it carried the long-distance railway tracks until 1946.

As early as 1895, in connection with the planned expansion of the Dresden railway systems, the first plans for a four-track expansion of the Bodenbach – Dresden line between Pirna and Dresden were drawn up. The project was realized - interrupted by the First World War  - from 1901 to 1934. From then on there was an operational separation between Pirna and Dresden-Neustadt between long-distance and suburban traffic.

After the Second World War , three of the four tracks were dismantled in 1946 as reparations for the Soviet Union . It was not until December 16, 1952 that double-track traffic between Pirna and Dresden was possible again. The former suburban tracks were now used for all traffic.

With the establishment of an S-Bahn network in Dresden from 1973, plans for the reconstruction of the long-distance railway tracks were also accelerated. Between 1979 and 1982, the planum for the reconstruction of the third and fourth track was prepared, which also included the construction of numerous bridges. Due to increasing track damage from alkali-damaged sleepers in the Deutsche Reichsbahn network , the project was postponed in the 1980s due to a lack of construction capacities.

Dresden – Coswig

The dismantling of the four-track section to one track by 1946 posed a problem for rail traffic between Leipzig and Dresden, the two largest cities in the Soviet Zone after East Berlin . From Coswig (b Dresden) to Borsdorf in Leipziger Land was taking into account the above Meissen leading second distance between these cities directional road set on the two single-track main lines. After the reconstruction of the second line track of the Leipzig-Dresden-Bahn by 1967 and the electrification by 1970, the ring traffic ended in 1971. The Dresden – Meißen section on both lines was integrated into the Dresden S-Bahn network in 1973, with the second track between Coswig and Meißen was not operational until the timetable change in December 1981.

Construction of the S-Bahn line

Typical equipment of a S-Bahn stop (Dresden Freiberger Str.)

After the political change in the GDR , the project was revised. A mere rebuilding of the missing tracks has now been refrained from. An operationally independent S-Bahn line was planned, which should only have connections to the long-distance railway network in a few places.

On December 5, 1995, the Saxon state government decided that the Free State of Saxony would provide significant financial support for the expansion of Dresden's S-Bahn infrastructure. On October 1, 1996, the construction of the new S-Bahn line between Pirna and Dresden-Neustadt began with the groundbreaking ceremony . The section between Pirna and Dresden-Dobritz was completed on July 15, 2001, and the section to Dresden-Neustadt was completed in December 2004.

All stops were given a uniform usable length of 140 meters, which limits the possible train lengths to five double-decker cars. The platform height was measured at 55 centimeters above the upper edge of the rails so that when using double-deck cars with low entry or Desiro multiple units of the DB class 642, entry is at the same level. All stops are equipped with elevators for the disabled.

Dresden-Pieschen stop during construction: The old passenger trainer Dresden-Neustadt-Coswig is still in operation, the long-distance railway tracks are under construction (June 2013).

In 2010, the construction and expansion of the S-Bahn tracks began in the Dresden-Neustadt-Coswig section. Originally the long-distance railway tracks were located there between the outlying suburban train tracks. After the renovation, the S-Bahn tracks now run parallel to the long-distance line on its eastern side.

First of all, starting from Radebeul West, the long-distance railway tracks were rebuilt on the west side of the track, which was completed at the end of 2013. The new construction of the parallel S-Bahn route on the east side also began from Coswig. By the end of 2013, the Radebeul Ost – Coswig section had been completed and put into operation. The previous station in Radebeul West, now stepped down to the stop, was given back its former name Radebeul-Kötzschenbroda .

The commissioning of the remaining Dresden-Neustadt-Radebeul Ost section of the S-Bahn line was initially planned for 2014. The final completion of the project and the associated clearance of the section from Dresden-Neustadt to Radebeul Ost took place on March 20, 2016.

After 100 days of operation, the Oberelbe transport association drew a positive balance in June 2016. 1500 travelers are counted daily at the newly built Dresden-Bischofsplatz stop.

Train traffic

Today the route is used almost exclusively by the Dresden S-Bahn lines S1 and S2. During rush hour there is an approximate 15-minute interval between Pirna and Dresden-Neustadt due to the shift in both lines. These services are ordered and financed by the Zweckverband Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe .

The following table shows the public transport routes that use the completed S-Bahn route between Pirna and Coswig in full or in part (as of: 2017 timetable):

line route EVU Cycle (min) comment
S 1 Schöna  - Meißen -Triebisch Valley DB Regio Southeast 30
10/20 (peak hours)
S 2 Pirna - Dresden Airport DB Regio Southeast 30th
RE19 Altenberg (Erzgeb) health resort  - Dresden main station City railway Saxony - Winter sports traffic; only seasonal
RE20 Litoměřice město - Dresden main station DB Regio Southeast - Excursion traffic; only seasonal
RE50 Dresden Hbf - Leipzig Hbf DB Regio Southeast 60 Shared use of the S-Bahn tracks from Dresden-Neustadt to Coswig (near Dresden), only stops in Radebeul Ost

In the event of construction work or disruptions, freight trains are occasionally run between Dresden Central Station and Pirna, especially at night.

During rush hour, the S-Bahn between Dresden Hbf and Meißen-Triebischtal will be more frequent from April 3, 2017. Instead of the current 30-minute cycle, the trains should run every 15 minutes between 5:00 and 8:30 and from 14:00 to 19:00. DB Regio AG and the Zweckverband Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe signed the new transport contract on December 19, 2016. Due to the dense route between Dresden Hbf and Dresden-Neustadt as well as in the Coswig (b Dresden) train station , a clean 15-minute cycle cannot be achieved. In contrast to the original plans, the stop of RE line 50 in Radebeul Ost will initially be retained.

Route description

course

The Pirna – Coswig line, which is mainly used by the S-Bahn, connects the Děčín – Dresden-Neustadt line at the southern end of the Pirna station on the Elbe side and runs parallel to it on the same four-track railway body. Dresden Central Station is crossed in its north hall. The Elbe is crossed on the five-track Marienbrücke between the Dresden-Mitte and Dresden-Neustadt traffic stations . In the northern head of the station of Dresden-Neustadt, the Görlitz – Dresden railway line is crossed. The switch connections are arranged in such a way that an S2 towards the city center and an S1 towards the city center can cross at no level. From Dresden-Neustadt the Pirna – Coswig line runs parallel to the Leipzig – Dresden line, which is also double-tracked on the side facing away from the Elbe. At the Radebeul Nord junction, the Leipzig – Dresden railway line is reduced to one track, and between this and the S-Bahn line a double-track connecting curve to the Berlin – Dresden railway line will be linked , which will be crossed under after the Radebeul-Zitzschewig stop. The here single-track railway line Leipzig – Dresden will then be brought back to the railway line Pirna – Coswig, so that the Coswig station can be reached on a three-track embankment. The tracks on the Pirna – Coswig line pass platform 1/2 at Coswig station and merge with the Leipzig – Dresden line at the northern end of the station.

All access points on the route are designed as island platforms and are barrier-free. At the Radebeul-Zitzschewig stop, this is done with a long ramp from Coswiger Strasse, and at all other stations with lifts.

Operating points

Pirna railway station. The S-Bahn tracks branch off to the right from the Děčín – Dresden-Neustadt main line. (2009)

Pirna

The first station in Pirna was in existence in 1848, when the first section of the Dresden-Bodenbacher railway from Dresden was completed. The current station facility was built in 1875 in connection with the construction of the Kamenz – Pirna railway line . In Pirna there is a connection to trains to Neustadt (Saxony) and Sebnitz .

Heidenau-Großsedlitz

The Heidenau-Großsedlitz stop is of little importance for tourist traffic. The nearby Grosssedlitz Baroque Garden is of major tourist interest .

Heidenau South

The Heidenau Süd stop is a central stop in the city of Heidenau that is very busy. The reception building is empty today and is in ruins.

Heidenau

Dresden-Niedersedlitz

The Dresden-Niedersedlitz stop was opened on December 1, 1877 as the Niedersedlitz stop. Since November 1st 1950, four months after the incorporation of the Dresden suburb of Niedersedlitz , it has been called Dresden-Niedersedlitz. The Dresden-Niedersedlitz stop is one of the busiest in the east of Dresden. There are inexpensive transfer options to Dresden tram line 6 and bus routes 65, 88 and 89.

Dresden-Dobritz

The Dresden-Dobritz stop was provisionally set up on July 1, 1971 in order to create a S-Bahn connection for the planned new Prohlis development area . When the route was expanded after 2000, it was moved around 100 meters out of town. In doing so, he received the central platform that is available today with disabled access. This means there are inexpensive transfer options to the Dresden tram and various bus routes .

Dresden-Reick

The Dresden-Reick station was relocated 200 meters towards the city from its original location when the line was expanded. The historic station building from 1907 is now used as a residential building. Directly at the train station you can change to the city bus routes 64, 65 and 87. Since the Panometer Dresden was set up in a former gasometer , the train station has also been of tourist importance.

Dresden-Strehlen

The Dresden-Strehlen stop has existed since 1902. It is the only S-Bahn stop whose historical structure was preserved when the line was expanded after 2000. An elevator was installed in the existing platform access. The listed historic station building is no longer used for rail operations and is now empty. The stop is served by several bus routes operated by Dresden's public transport company. A tram connection to the stop is planned as part of the Stadtbahn 2020 project .

Trains of the S1 line in Dresden Hbf (2011)

Dresden Hbf

In Dresden Central Station, tracks 18 and 19 are used by the S-Bahn. Several track connections create a link with the long-distance rail network. In the eastern part there is a siding in the middle between the tracks, which is used as a turning track by the amplifier drives ending at the main station in rush hour traffic. However, the trips on the S2 line that end on Sundays turn at the platform.

Dresden Freiberger Strasse
