The Veselí nad Moravou – Sudoměřice nad Moravou railway is a main line ("celostátní dráha") in the Czech Republic , which was originally built and operated by the priv. Austro-Hungarian State Railroad Company (StEG) as a branch of the Brno – Vlárský průsmyk (Wlarabahn) line. It runs from Veselí nad Moravou ( Rohatetz ) via Strážnice ( Straßnitz ) to the Slovakian border at Sudoměřice ( Sudoměřitz ).

history

The concession for a line " from a point on the left Marchuferstrecke next Ostra to Straßnitz possibly to the state border " was given to the StEG on October 22nd, 1884. The concession was issued until December 31st, 1965. The line was opened on October 10th, 1887. The StEG carried out the operation itself. On November 15, 1893, the cross-border line to Szakolcza in Hungary went into operation.

On January 1st, 1908, the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) took over the management. With the nationalization of the StEG on October 15, 1909, the infrastructure came to the kkStB. In 1912, the timetable showed three mixed pairs of 2nd and 3rd class trains, two of which were linked to Szakolcza (Skalica) and one to Rohatetz. There were four more travel options on the Strassnitz – Rohatetz route. They needed between 40 and 58 minutes for the 15-kilometer route.

During the Second World War , the route lay entirely in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . The operators were now the Protectorate Railways Bohemia and Moravia (ČMD-BMB). On May 9, 1945, the entire line came back to the ČSD.

Strážnice railway station (2010)

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).

As a result of the state border reestablished in 1993, traffic to Slovakia gradually declined. In the 2007 annual timetable there were therefore only four pairs of cross-border trains on weekdays and only two on the weekends. With the timetable change on December 8, 2007, travel between Sudoměřice nad Moravou and Skalica na Slovensku was finally completely stopped.

In the 2012 timetable, the route is served every two hours by passenger trains on line S91 ( Hodonín - Javorník nad Veličkou ). On weekdays, additional trains condense the offer, sometimes at hourly intervals.

On September 13, 2016, a serious accident occurred near Vnorovy in which a passenger train collided with a tractor at a level crossing and completely railed. The driver of the tractor was killed and nine of the 25 travelers were injured. The leading railcar and the remains of the tractor burned out. The rail crane brought to the rescue on September 14th also derailed and overturned.
