The Balmoral (formerly Norwegian Crown , Crown Odyssey ) is a cruise ship operated by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is used for cruises .

history

The ship was built in 1988 as the Crown Odyssey at Meyer Werft in Papenburg for the shipping company Royal Cruise Line (not to be confused with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ). The design of the ship comes from the Danish naval architect Knud E. Hansen. After the commissioning, the Crown Odyssey was initially in the Caribbean. In 1992 the ship was sold to Cruise Monastery ( Nassau , Bahamas ). In 1996 Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) bought the financially troubled shipping company and integrated the ships into its own fleet, while the Crown Odyssey was renamed Norwegian Crown . In 2000 she drove again under the name Crown Odyssey with Orientlines.

In 2003 the ship in Singapore (Sembawang Shipyards) was rebuilt, completely renovated and renamed again to Norwegian Crown . She was in service with NCL until May 26, 2006, when she was transferred to the shipping company Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines sold and chartered until November 2007.

On June 7, 2006, the Norwegian Crown ran aground off Saint George's (Bermuda) .

On November 7, 2007 the ship was delivered to Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines handed over. On November 16, it docked in the Elbe 17 dry dock of Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH in Hamburg and was extended by a 30.20 meter section amidships at the shipyard. In this way, an additional 186 passenger and an additional 53 crew cabins were created. Furthermore, 60 new balconies were installed and various public areas were newly created or revised.

The construction section, 30.20 meters long, 28.21 meters wide and weighing around 1,800 tons, was manufactured by the Bremerhaven Schichau Seebeck shipyard on behalf of Blohm + Voss Repair and was launched on October 6, 2007. On October 30, 2007 she reached the shipyard swimming.

In 2008 the ship entered service as the Balmoral .

To mark the hundredth anniversary of the Titanic disaster, a memorial service was held on the Balmoral on April 15, 2012 at the scene of the accident. The route was the same as that of the Titanic in 1912, with an additional stop in Halifax , the cemetery for about 100 identified victims. The menu and the number of passengers have been adjusted to the historical event . Due to a medical incident, the journey had to be briefly interrupted, but could then be continued.

Machine system and drive

The diesel-mechanical drive of the Balmoral consists of two so-called "father-and-son" drive groups. An eight-cylinder ("father") and a six-cylinder diesel engine ("son") from Krupp-MaK act via a reduction gear ("twin engine gear") and shaft line on a controllable pitch propeller that runs at a largely constant speed.
