Balthasar Ambuel

Balthasar Ambuel , also Balthasar Ambühl (* around 1583 ; † October 10, 1660 ) was a Swiss politician and officer .

Life

Balthasar Ambuel came from the respected Valais Ambühl family. His parents were Captain Stefan Ambuel and his wife Margareta (née von Riedmatten), sister of the Sion prince-bishop Hildebrand von Riedmatten. His grandson was Alfons Ambuel , who later became governor of the Valais .

After his wedding he became an innkeeper in Sion in 1603 and was a member of the Valais district council from 1609.

1609, as well as 1623 to 1624, 1627 to 1628 and from 1636 to 1638 he was mayor of Sion; During this time he was also bailiff of Monthey from 1621 to 1623 and from 1631 to 1635 and from 1647 to 1650 he was the great castellan of Sion.

From 1616 he was a captain and from 1623 to 1651 he was a colonel in Lower Valais . He entered the service of Savoy as a colonel in 1624 , raised a regiment and fought against the Neapolitans, and was appointed governor of Acqui in the margraviate of Montferrat .

From 1635 to 1637 and from 1641 he took part in French service in the military expeditions to Lorraine , Flanders and Spain , for this purpose he set up a regiment with 2,000 men and commanded it at the head until he resigned his service on July 14, 1648.

As a determined Protestant and opponent of the secular power of the Prince-Bishop of Sitten, he left the Valais , became a citizen of Bern in 1652 , was accepted as a Protestant and acquired the Gerzensee Castle .

Balthasar Ambuel was married to Barbilia, daughter of Johann Ducomin, in his first marriage from 1602 and to Verena (née Schmid) from the Goms district in 1633 . The names of his children are known:

  • Johann Jakob Ambuel, with him the line of the family died out;
  • Emmanuel Ambuel, stayed in Valais as a Catholic ; his grandson Franz Friedrich Ambuel was Prince-Bishop of Sitten from 1760 to 1780.
  • Juliana Ambuel, married to Adrian Lambien (1620–1687), governor of the Valais.
