Bruno Balscheit

Bruno Ernst Otto Balscheit (born October 22, 1910 in Insterburg ; † October 8, 1993 in Läufelfingen , other location: Liestal ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman and politician.

Life

Bruno Balscheit was the son of the textile merchant Friedrich Otto Julius Balscheit and his wife Martha Emma (née Neumann).

He finished at the University of Königsberg and at the Theological Seminary Bethel a study of theology ; in Bethel he heard lectures from Wilhelm Vischer .

In protest against the rampant nationalism , he left Germany in 1931 and in 1933 became a parish priest in Fuldera , Tschierv and Lu in the canton of Grisons in Switzerland before he was pastor from 1937 to 1975 in Läufelfingen; there he received citizenship in 1942 . In his work as a pastor he was not only active in pastoral care, but also gave religious instruction at various grammar schools , and since 1970 he has been an honorary lecturer in the history of religion and non-Christian religions at the theological faculty of the University of Basel .

He finished 1934 (other date: 1938), his theology studies at the university with a doctorate to Dr. theol .; his main research interests were the Old Testament , Judaism , oriental languages and cultures, and non-Christian religions. He advocated dialogue with Judaism and Israel and later also dealt with the other non-Christian world religions. He was active as a writer and published publications on the Old Testament, and from 1948 to 1951 he was the editor of the journal Neue Ways - journal of religious socialism , which dealt with spirituality , theological and ethical questions, comments on global challenges and domestic political issues.

He was a member of the Theological Concordat Examination Authority, which tested students on their theoretical skills in the middle and towards the end of their studies; the authority existed until the end of 2003 and was subject to the Concordat on the approval of reformed pastors.

Bruno Balscheit was married to Dora Frieda Liselotte (née Bola) since 1933 and his second marriage since 1968 to the pastor Margrit Dorothea (née Cleis) from Buckten .

Political activity

Bruno Balscheit was involved in religious, social and political issues, was from 1947 to 1967, as a member of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP), Baselbieter district administrator and during this time from 1958 to 1959 district administrator. In his parliamentary work, he mainly dealt with the Baselbiet secondary schools with seminars and campaigned for retirement and nursing homes, penal systems , children's playgrounds, fair wages and working conditions. As an advocate of the independent Basel area, he was a member of the Constitutional Council in the sixties.

After the death of his first wife, he withdrew from politics and devoted himself primarily to teaching.
