Christoph Barth

Christoph Barth (born September 29, 1917 in Safenwil ; † August 21, 1986 in Basel ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman and university professor.

Life

Christoph Barth was a son of the theologian Karl Barth and his wife, the violinist Nelly Hoffmann (1893–1976). He had four siblings:

After completing his school education, he began to study theology at the University of Basel on October 1, 1936 , which he finished on March 31, 1941. He was then in Basel as vicar worked and was on Nov. 4, 1941 ordained . From 1942 to 1944 he continued to work as a vicar and from 1946 to 1947 he stayed in Leiden in the Netherlands in preparation for his stay abroad as a theological teacher. On September 30, 1947 he did his doctorate under Walter Baumgartner with the dissertation The salvation from death in the individual lamentations and thanksgiving songs of the Old Testament .

From 1947 to 1952 he was initially theological teacher in Banjarmasin in Indonesia , from 1953 to August 31, 1954 lecturer and from September 1, 1954 to June 1965 professor at the Theological College in Jakarta .

After his return to Europe at the end of 1967 he was a brief deputy professor at the University of Mainz and on January 5, 1968, he was appointed full professor for the Old Testament at the University of Mainz. From April 1, 1969 to March 31, 1973 he was the director of the Evangelical Old Testament seminary and from 1969 to 1970 dean of the Evangelical Theological Faculty. After teaching as a full professor at the Department of Old Testament and Biblical Archeology since April 1, 1973, he retired on September 30, 1982 ; During this time he was co-director of the seminar from April 1, 1973 to March 31, 1980. From October 1, 1979 to September 30, 1982, he was on leave to head the Association of Theological Schools in Indonesia in Indonesia to provide “spiritual development aid” and to translate important theological textbooks into Indonesian .

Christoph Barth was married to Marie Claire (1927–2019), theologian, honorary doctorate from the University of Basel and advocate of women, daughter of Edouard Frommel (1895–1965), professor of medicine. They have four children together; of these is known by name:

Spiritual and theological work

As a teacher, scholar and preacher, Christoph Barth promoted indigenous theological work in Indonesia, among other things through work with doctoral students, guest lecturers and the translation of the Psalms. He was also the author of an Old Testament theology and theological handbook in Indonesian.
