action
Will Burton is a nondescript freshman at his new school who, in his spare time, regularly emails his idol, David Bowie , without ever getting a reply. Through his love of music, he met the popular student Charlotte Barnes, who after a short time asked him to start a band with her.
In the near future there is to be a big music competition, the bandslam , the winners of which are promised a record deal . Charlotte has got it into her head to compete there while beating her ex-boyfriend Ben Wheatley and his band. Against all odds, a group of four outsiders around Charlotte grows into a real band and soon the five have a real chance of winning the competition. Meanwhile, Will's friendship with the monotonous, book-loving Sa5m (The 5 is silent) suffers from the obligations of his membership in Charlotte's group.
The band resolves to play Phil's song , a song that Charlotte's father wrote. When her father dies, however, she unexpectedly leaves the band. She reveals to Will that he and the band were just trying to show her father that she could do better. By being kinder to outsiders like Will and the rest of the members, she tried to distance herself from her past, when she was with the selfish Ben and made music in his band.
Will's friend Sa5m joins the band and sings for Charlotte. Charlotte suddenly shows up at the band slam and is in the audience with Will's mother Karen. In front of Charlotte's band, however, Ben performs the Phil's song . The friends have to think of something new quickly and play a song that Sa5m sang before. Although they get the most applause, another band wins.
At the end of the film, a teenager uploads the appearance to the YouTube video platform . The video became so popular that Will's idol, David Bowie, came across it. He finally writes Will back and offers him and the band a record deal. Later all the friends are gathered at the graduation ceremony. Sa5m meet with Will and Ben with Charlotte.
