Barbara Junge (* 1968 in Stuttgart ) is a German journalist . She served as US - correspondent the editorial office of the Tagesspiegel in Washington . Junge is together with Ulrike Winkelmann the editor-in-chief of taz ( the daily newspaper ) .

Life

From 1987 to 1990, Barbara Junge studied sociology and politics at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1993 she completed her studies at the Free University of Berlin with a degree in sociology. After training at the Berlin School of Journalism , she worked for the Berliner Tageszeitung (taz) since 1996 , first as a Berlin correspondent, then as head of department for the Berlin section. In 2001, Junge switched to Tagesspiegel , where she first reported on state politics in Berlin before moving to the political department. Domestic policy was one of her responsibilities. From 2010 on, Junge was part of the political section's editorial team. In 2013, Junge went to Washington with her partner and Spiegel journalist Holger Stark , as a USA correspondent , where she took over the management of the Tagesspiegel office and lived with her family. At the end of April 2016 she became deputy editor-in-chief of taz. From May 1, 2020, after Georg Löwisch left, she was the sole editor-in-chief. Since August 1, 2020, Barbara Junge and Ulrike Winkelmann have formed a female dual leadership.

Journalistic work

Young's focus during your work at Tagesspiegel included reporting on topics such as the death penalty as well as civil rights and civil society. In addition, she provided intensive support on the subject of data protection for the Tagesspiegel in Berlin. In the US, Young wrote mainly about the politics of the White House under Barack Obama . She also accompanied the Democratic and Republican primary campaigns . Since the riots in Ferguson near St. Louis in the summer of 2014, she has reported on the discussion of police violence against African-American youth in the USA with numerous reports and reports. Various research and scholarship trips took her to Syria , Israel and Turkey, among others . In 1998 she completed the Arthur F. Burns Fellowship , during which she sat at the San Diego Union Tribune . Barbara Junge also worked for Die Zeit (2009 to 2015) and the magazine Cicero (2013).

Award

In 1998, Junge was awarded the Arthur F. Burns Prize for her report, The Cops Next Door, about policing in San Diego .
