Barbara Schmalfeldt (born September 21, 1965 in Munich ) is a German gynecologist and professor of gynecological oncology .

Life and career

Barbara Schmalfeldt was born in Munich in 1965. From 1984 to 1991 she studied medicine at the University of Regensburg and the Technical University of Munich and completed her medical internship at the I. Medical Clinic of the Technical University of Munich . In 1992 she completed her doctoral thesis on “Pressure parameters of the right and left heart under tachycardial cardiac arrhythmias” with the grade magna cum laude from Professor K. Stangl. This was followed by specialist training in the gynecological clinic and polyclinic of the Technical University of Munich under the director Henner Graeff , which she qualified as a specialist in obstetricsand gynecology degree. From 1997 to 2001 she was senior physician in the gynecological clinic of the Technical University of Munich.

In 2001 she completed her habilitation at the Technical University of Munich in the field of gynecology and obstetrics with a thesis on "Invasion and proliferation factors in the malignant progression of ovarian tumors" with Professor Graeff and received her teaching license . In 2003 she became a life-time C3 professor for gynecological oncology at the Technical University of Munich; at the same time, she has been head of the gynecological clinic at the Technical University of Munich under the direction of Marion Kiechle as senior physician and deputy clinic director since 2001 and of the gynecological cancer center at the Klinikum rechts der Isar of the TU since 2009 Munich. From 2013 to 2015 she was also Executive Director of the Roman Herzog Cancer Center at the Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich. Since July 2015 Schmalfeldt has been director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Gynecology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE).

The focus of her work lies in the area of ​​gynecological oncology and familial, genetically inherited, breast and ovarian cancer . She is an expert in conservative and surgical therapy for benign and malignant diseases of the uterus , ovaries , vulva and breast . She also deals with minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery .

Memberships and honors

Barbara Schmalfeldt is a member of numerous national and international trade associations. She is active as secretary of the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics and a member of the German Cancer Society , the Working Group for Gynecological Oncology , the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the professional association of gynecologists . She is also a member of the “Breast Cancer”, “Uterus” and “Malignant Ovarian Tumors” project groups at the Munich Tumor Center.

From 2001 to 2015 she was the head of the project group “Malignant Ovarian Tumors” and from 2003 to 2008 she was the spokesperson for the “Ovar” commission of the Gynecological Oncology Working Group (AGO) and a member of the board. Since 2012 she has been the deputy chairwoman of the Gynecological Oncology Working Group. In 1996 Schmalfeldt was awarded the Science Prize of the Bavarian Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology and in October 2009 she received an award from the Munich Tumor Center.
