action

Kelly, Barbie's little sister, is discouraged because she doesn't know what to paint. Barbie tells her sister a story about a girl who painted what she dreamed. Her name was Rapunzel and her hair was beautiful and long. Her friends are the young dragon Penelope and the rabbit Hobie. Rapunzel lives as a servant in the manor house of the baroness and witch Gothel. It is hidden in a forest behind a magical wall, nobody but Gothel can get there. One day Rapunzel and her friends discover a secret room below the kitchen. There they find a silver hairbrush, an engraving that was a present from their parents for their first birthday. But Gothel had told Rapunzel that she was abandoned when she was a few days old and that Gothel had raised her ever since. The friends come across a secret passage below the secret room. Since Penelope cannot fit through the opening that happened by accident, she and Hobie stay in the room and wait for Rapunzel.

Rapunzel arrives through the corridor near a village near a castle. She enters the village, crosses the market square and over a bridge towards the castle. In a meadow she saves Princess Katrina, King Friedrich's daughter, who has fallen into a trap of the enemy king Wilhelm. Katrina is Prince Stefan's little sister, who also rushes to help. He is fascinated by Rapunzel and would like to see her again, but before Stefan introduces himself, the clock strikes and Rapunzel quickly returns. Otto, Gothel's ferret, has observed everything and tells Gothel that Rapunzel was in the village and talked to a young man. Angry Gothel storms into Rapunzel's room and wants to know the man's name from her. Since Rapunzel cannot give the name, Gothel destroys Rapunzel's pictures and painting equipment and transforms her room into a tower without doors. Gothel doesn't want to let Rapunzel out until she reveals the man's name. Penelope's father Hugo has to guard Rapunzel.

That night the hairbrush turns into a magical brush, the next day Penelope and Hobie Rapunzel paint berries. Since the brushes are broken, she takes the previous hairbrush. But Rapunzel doesn't need any color; the brush paints what she thinks. A butterfly flies out of the picture of the village, Rapunzel walks in the opposite direction through the picture and arrives in the palace garden. There she meets Prince Stefan, Rapunzel introduces himself, but doesn't want to know his name. She shows him the magic brush and he leads her to the silversmith, who might know the maker. In fact, it is his brother, who comes in the kingdom of Wilhelm and therefore cannot ask him. Prince Stefan invites Rapunzel to the evening masked ball. He wants to recognize her by her hair. Then Penelope shows up and urges Rapunzel to come back. Otherwise Gothel could do something to her father Hugo if she does not find Rapunzel. With the help of the magic brush Rapunzel paints the tower on a door in a castle wall and they both return.

With the magic brush, Rapunzel designs a ball gown on the advice of her friends, but Otto notices that too and brings the written invitation to Gothel, who angrily rushes to Rapunzel. Gothel destroys the magic brush, the magic picture, and cuts off Rapunzel's long hair. When Rapunzel still cannot give the man's name, but Gothel is absolutely certain that she knows, she curses the tower with the curse: “Whoever is of insincere heart should not be liberated. The curse is spoken for all time - it will never be broken by anyone, ”which forms a magical shell around the tower. She chains Hugo to the tower with a magic chain and goes to the ball disguised as Rapunzel. Hugo explains to Penelope that the magic only works if someone has been dishonest. But Penelope knows that Rapunzel wasn't lying and encourages her to go through the shell. This succeeds and Rapunzel and Hobie fly over the protective wall on Penelope's back.

Masked and pinned on Rapunzel's long hair, Gothel deceives Stefan and lures him out of the castle. She reveals herself and attacks him with her magical lightning bolts, since she sees him as responsible for Rapunzel's novel behavior. Stefan can escape back to the castle. At the same time, King Wilhelm invades the castle. Gothel arrives when the kings fight against each other and Stefan with two of Wilhelm's knights and attacks with their lightning bolts. Gothel reveals that she loved Wilhelm and because he was only seen as a friend, she kidnapped his child Rapunzel out of anger and started a war between the two kingdoms because Wilhelm believed Friedrich was behind the kidnapping. Gothel triumphantly announces that Friedrich will never see his daughter again and is very surprised when Rapunzel shows up with her friends. She pursues Rapunzel with her magic, but she and her friends have prepared for it. Rapunzel runs through the door held open by Penelope with the painted tower, which the dragon suddenly slams shut in front of Gothel, so that Gothel penetrates through the picture into the tower.

There Gothel meets her own curse - the insincere remains locked up forever while Otto has to serve her. The two kingdoms unite, Rapunzel and Stefan get married and move into their own palace, in which Hobie, Penelope and Hugo also live.
