history

The core of the Romanesque church building from the 13th century (probably between 1200 and 1280) has been preserved. Around the middle of the 15th century, the rising masonry of the chancel and the wall paintings in the chancel were redesigned. The finds made during archaeological investigations show burials inside the church after it was destroyed in 1532. The church was also without a roof for a long time. This can be proven on the basis of the remains of tree growth found inside the church and speaks for a ruin situation that was not used sacred for a long time.

In 1709 the church was renovated and in 1717 the bell had to be melted down and poured again ( Me fecit Nicolaus de Löwenberg Neostadii 1717 ).

The interior was restored in 1820, the roof and tower were restored in 1833, and further restorations were carried out in 1843/1845 and 1864.

In 1902 the tower was rebuilt and the sacristy was added . After the baroque renovations were removed and the nave was increased in 1960 , the church was given a new facility.

The frescoes discovered in 1979 were uncovered between 1983 and 1990 . These were probably attached between 1280 and 1290, those in the choir around 1400.

architecture

The small church building has a nave, a retracted square choir and a front western tower. There are buttresses at the corners of the choir. There are two Romanesque windows from the 13th century, of which only the eastern one is a slit window.

The choir has a groin vault . The north wall of the choir contains a former sacrament niche. This suggests a pre-Reformation parish church. This is supported by the fact that there was a rectory below the church.

Furnishing

The inscription on the single bell refers to Nicolaus Löw de Löwenberg, Wiener Neustadt 1717. In the front part of the nave there is a Gothic baptismal font.

The preserved epitaphs in the church name Eleonora Isabella von Samitz, died 1716, and Georg Friedrich Freiherr von Preinberg, died 1726.

The tombstone of Eleonora Isabella von Samitz is 98 cm wide and contains two coats of arms. The inscription quotes two scriptures, above John 14:13  GNB and below John 11.25  GNB .

The epitaph of Georg Friedrich Freiherr von Preinberg is 92.3 cm wide, its edge is 4.5 cm wide at the top and 3.3 cm at the bottom. The letter height is 5 cm and the raised letters 7 cm. A coat of arms is attached between the upper and lower cartridges. Two biblical passages are quoted in the text of the inscription, above Job 19.25  GNB and below 2 Tim 4.7  GNB .
