Baruch Jakob Placzek (born as Bernhard Placzek October 4, 1834 in Mährisch Weißkirchen , Austrian Empire ; died September 17, 1922 in Brno ) was a Czech rabbi .

Life

Bernhard Placzek's father Abraham Placzek (1799–1884) was a rabbi and taught his son the Talmud . Baruch Placzek attended grammar schools in Mikulov and Brno . He studied in Vienna and Leipzig and received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1856 with Wilhelm Wachsmuth with a dissertation in cultural history. He then taught at Jewish community schools in Germany and founded a community school in Hamburg . In 1861 he was called to Brno as a reform-oriented rabbi, where he initially worked as his father's assistant. In 1884 he became a state rabbiordered from Moravia. He made sure that only trained rabbis were included in the job advertisements. He promoted the establishment of the Israelite Theological Institute in Vienna and became its curator.

Placzek wrote sermons and speeches. He was interested in the scientific questions of the time and corresponded with Charles Darwin , whose theory of evolution he disseminated. He was a close friend of Gregor Mendel and gave scientific lectures at the Brno Natural Research Association. His contributions have also appeared in the popular science magazine Kosmos . He published short stories and poems under the pseudonym Benno Planek.

Placzek was made a Knight of the Franz Joseph Order .

Baruch Placzek was married to a daughter of the Brno factory owner Jacob Löw-Beer, the physicist George Placzek (1905–1955) was a grandson, and Rabbi Leo Baeck was a nephew.
