Basilisk is a dark metal band from Donaueschingen, founded in 1996 .

Band history

The band was formed in November 1996. Elements from Gothic and Melodic Metal as well as influences from Heavy Metal of the 1980s and 1990s shaped the style of the band according to their own statements. The line-up at that time consisted of Sixten Streich (vocals, keyboard), Rudolf But (guitar), "Siggi" (bass) and Rüdiger Steinhuber (drums). At the end of 1997 the first demo CD In the Room of Lights was recorded.

The year 1998 was mainly characterized by 12 club concerts, including the opening act for Crematory . The band also won first place in a newcomer competition in Nusplingen . In the spring of 1999 further concerts followed, among others with EverEve in Leonberg and the appearance as headliner at the Blumberger Rocknacht. Basilisk also took first place in the newcomer contest in the Animal House in Donaueschingen .

Due to the positive feedback, Basilisk appeared in 2000 in the opening act for My Dying Bride and The Gathering, among others . A festival at the Universal DOG in Lahr , together with the Farmer Boys , Weissglut , EverEve and Shock followed.

At the end of 2000 Frank Scheuble replaced the previous bass player “Siggi” and enriched the tonal spectrum with his clear vocals. At the same time, Tommy alias Thomas Adis joined the band, who from then on took over the keyboards for frontman Sixten. In December 2001 the second album Between Light and Shadow appeared with eight songs in the new line-up. In 2002, eleven concerts followed, including with Tankard , Ashes You Leave and Chinchilla . At the concert in October 2002 with Sacred Sin from Portugal, the foundation stone was laid for a distribution deal with the Portuguese label Nebula Records and the booking agency Icon Music Agency ; both subcontractors to Dark Music Productions . The album Between Light and Shadow was distributed worldwide by Nebula Records from 2003 . In connection with this, a 10-day promotional tour through Portugal followed at the end of 2003 , including concerts in Lisbon , Portimao and Leiria .

In 2005 and 2006 there were relatively few concerts on the program. The band had used the live abstinence to release the album Dark Seasons with 13 tracks in May 2006 . In November of the same year, the mini EP Empor was released just in time for the 10th anniversary of the band. This anniversary was celebrated by a small self-organized festival in November 2006. From then on, Basilisk and Singer Sixten went their separate ways.

By dividing the vocal parts, the songs experienced a greater tonal variety. After a discovery phase and relatively few concerts between 2007 and 2009, the album Rote Tränen was created , which was released in May 2010. Due to family changes of the individual band members, the live activities were further reduced in the following years. In 2014 there was enough new song material to start recording the current album Traumland . Like the last two albums, this album was also recorded entirely independently. With Out of the Dark it also includes a Falco cover. In January 2015, Basilisk signed a promotion and sales deal with Bob Media and Echozone, respectively .

style

The band is mostly attributed to Dark Metal. Reviews occasionally make comparisons to Crematory due to the singing, Ensiferum , Moonsorrow and Dimmu Borgir .

The band describes the style as a mixture of " Gothic , Death and Melodic Metal as well as influences from Heavy Metal of the 1980s and 1990s". The English and German singing appears to be multi-layered "from clear and melodic to hard and aggressive". In a review of the webzine Amboss-Mag, "straight strings, growls , clean vocal passages and spherical keys [as] the supporting pillars" of the music are named.
