Portimão [ puɾtiˈmɐ̃u ] is a city ( Cidade ) in the Algarve region , Portugal . It is the seat of the district of the same name. On June 30, 2011, the district had 55,614 inhabitants on an area of 182.1 km².
history
The origins of human settlement in the district go back to the Neolithic . A large number of traces have been preserved from the time of the Roman inhabitants, including vessels, coins and remains of buildings. The Arabs left behind botanical and architectural traces in particular , including buildings converted into today's chapels or striking chimneys in the construction of houses.
After the completion of the Reconquista , the place was not significantly repopulated as Vila Nova de Portimão until the 15th century under King Dom Afonso V. In the course of the emerging Portuguese voyages of discovery , the importance of the port increased. After the destruction suffered by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 , Portimão recovered only slowly. Only in the 19th century, with the development of the food industry (especially canning factories, dried fruits and fishing and processing of catches), the place received a significant development boost. In 1924 Portimão was elevated to a city ( Cidade ) by President Manuel Teixeira Gomes , who himself came from Portimão.
In 1975, the Alvor Convention on the independence of the former Portuguese possession of Angola was concluded in the district of Alvor .
