The Battenberg Gietl Verlag , based in Regenstauf is a German publisher of numismatics , historic paper money collectors and literature as well as for regional titles and for Lower Bavaria , Upper Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate .

General

The publishing house employs around 20 people, who work in the departments of sales, marketing, editing, press and public relations, typesetting, accounting, subscription management and advertising management. The publishing house also operates its own warehouse and shipping department.

Battenberg Gietl Verlag has existed in its current legal form as a GmbH since 1994, when Heinrich Gietl and Josef Roidl founded H. Gietl Verlag & Publication Service GmbH. In the early years it was primarily a magazine about historical paper money and a corresponding book program that initiated the development into a special-interest publisher.

In 1994 the magazine “Münzen & Sammeln” was bought and in 2000, Albert Beck's “MünzenRevue” was another numismatic magazine.

With the purchase of Battenberg Verlag in 2005, the company developed into one of the largest publishers in Germany for collector's literature. In this section, the publisher covers a spectrum of topics that extends from the focus on coins and historical paper money to books on porcelain, glass, wristwatches, toys, medals and antiques.

In 2014 the MZ-Buchverlag and the SüdOst-Verlag were acquired as imprints , so that the new section “Heimat” could be established. This was expanded by the takeover of the book and art publisher Oberpfalz in July 2016, so that the majority of Bavarica titles and regional publications for Eastern Bavaria now come from Battenberg Gietl Verlag.

history

Beginnings

The first edition of “Der Geldscheinsammler” - the magazine for paper money - was published in November 1986 by Heinrich Gietl Verlag. The editor from the very beginning was Alexander Persijn, who oversaw the magazine for many years, enriched it with his articles and shaped it with his editorial.

With the opening of the borders to the Federal Republic of Germany from 1989 onwards, numerous collectors from the GDR had access to the publisher's publications and became readers of the “Geldscheinsammlers”. The first book titles appeared with “Das Notenbuch” by Dieter Hoffmann and the catalog “Das Papiergeld Bayerns” by Albert Pick. Step by step, their own books have now been published, which initially mainly dealt with historical paper money.

Further development into a specialist publisher for collectors' literature

The H. Gietl Verlag & Publication Service GmbH was founded in 1994 and launched a book program that satisfied the needs of coin and paper money collectors for specialist literature. In addition to its own books, numerous books from other publishers on numismatic topics were also offered.

In August 2005, Gietl Verlag acquired Battenberg Verlag from the Droemer Knaur publishing group in Munich. Battenberg Verlag was founded in 1956 and was originally a recognized science publisher for physics. In addition, it developed into a specialist publisher for collectors from a wide variety of collecting areas. With the takeover of Battenberg Verlag and the associated book rights, Battenberg Gietl Verlag became one of the leading specialist publishers for collectors' literature in Europe.

Magazines

In addition to the “Geldscheinsammler”, the publisher also published the magazine “Telefonkarten News” from 1993 onwards, but parted with it in 1994 in order to be able to devote itself entirely to numismatics. In 1995 the magazine "Münzen & Papiergeld" (today "Münzen & Sammeln") was acquired, which since 2002 has also been the new home for the "money collector". Since 1996 the German Numismatic Society has published the “Numismatic News Sheet” in the Battenberg Gietl Verlag. In 2000, Albert Beck's "MünzenRevue", the largest and most renowned numismatic magazine in the German-speaking area, was integrated into the publishing house.

New imprints for the Bavarica program

On March 1, 2014, H. Gietl Verlag & Publication Service GmbH took over SüdOst-Verlag and MZ-Buchverlag and thus expanded its publishing range on a large scale to include regional titles from Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate, such as B. regional travel guides, illustrated books, cookbooks, novels, crime stories, Bavarian humor and much more.

At the beginning of 2016, Heinrich Gietl retired from the management and Josef Roidl became the sole managing director. In January 2016 the company name changed to "Battenberg Gietl Verlag GmbH". On July 1, 2016, the Battenberg Gietl Verlag also took over the book and art publisher Oberpfalz and thus expanded its range to include further regional titles from the northern Upper Palatinate.

Company anniversary - the publisher turns 25

On May 18, 1994 Heinrich Gietl and Josef Roidl laid the foundation stone for an extremely successful company history and founded the H. Gietl Verlag and Publication Service GmbH. In 2019 the publishing team celebrated its 25th anniversary. The publishing house can look back on 25 exciting and varied years in which it has developed into one of the largest players in the "Heimat" division.
