geography

The farm is located in a clearing in the Spessart above the Mühlental between Bischbrunn and Schollbrunn. It is located east of the Schleifmühle , 150 m west of the A3 motorway . To the east of it the districts of Oberndorf , Esselbach and Schollbrunn converge.

history

The Baumgartshof is one of the oldest settlements in the southeastern Spessart . The first evidence comes from the 13th century. The original owners of the farm were the Lords of Reinstein , the builders of the nearby Reinstein Castle , which has now been abandoned . The "Stockenhainer Wald" (today Stockenhahnwald ) belonged to the property, some of which was cleared for agricultural use . The place to build the Baumgartshof was chosen near a historic main street , Poststrasse .

From 1400 the court came into the hands of the Augustinian canons of the Triefenstein monastery , who had the court expanded. In addition to controlling the trade route, the focus was on the use of wood. As early as 1420 it is documented that overexploitation of the Spessart Forest greatly reduced the quality of the wood. Instead of bääholz (construction timber) it can only be used as firewood . In 1606 it was determined by the monastery chronicler that there was only arid and schir verrauthe courtyard .

During the German Peasants' War , the property was completely robbed and burned down. It was rebuilt a bit away from its original location, in its current location. In 1803 the Baumgartshof came into the possession of the Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg dynasty , who leased it to various farmers and foresters in the following decades . In 1950 the southern forest property (Stockenhainer forest) and the farm were sold to the Fürstenberg family , and in 1996 the forest north of the A3 was sold to the community of Esselbach. In the meantime, Hof und Stockenhainer forest property has passed into private hands.

description

Panorama of the fenced-in estate area; right way from the A3 into the Schleifbachtal (no car traffic)

The enclosed courtyard today consists of two permanent buildings, a long, rectangular mansion facing south-west to the north-east on the northern edge and another almost west-east facing rectangular stone house at the southern end of the courtyard. Today the Mühlenstraße Haseltal cultural trail of the Archaeological Spessart Project runs past the farm.

To the south of today's Baumgarthof there are stone formations that are often referred to as graves . However, these are the remains of the first courtyard building on the original site.
