The SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 e. V. from Krefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia is with 9,500 members (as of October 10, 2017) not only the largest swimming club in Germany , but also one of the largest swimming clubs worldwide. The factory club has a comprehensive range of popular sports , leisure and wellness facilities , a successful swimming department and professionally organized women's and men's teams in the respective German water polo leagues. Another trademark of the traditional Lower Rhine association is the exemplary youth work, which has already received several awards from the NRW Swimming Association and the Dresdner Bank . The main sponsor is Bayer AG .

history

The association was launched on May 8, 1908 by workers from the former Uerdinger wagon factory under the name “Uerdinger Schwimmverein 08” and in the early days it initially operated the “Roos” summer bathing establishment on an old branch of the Rhine in neighboring Hohenbudberg . Around a decade later, the company moved to today's Waldsee in the north of Krefeld. However, the positive membership development, initial expansion measures and respectable successes, such as winning the German championship by the men's water polo team in 1926, suffered a major setback due to the anti-Nazi dictatorship and the devastating Allied air raids in World War II . Thanks to the joint efforts of many members, the Waldseebad was gradually restored and consistently expanded in the years after the end of the war.

The swimming club , which from then on traded under the name SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 , experienced a major boom when Bayer AG officially entered the club in 1951. The following decades were characterized by continuous expansion and modernization measures - including the construction of the clubhouse in the 1960s and the construction of and Commissioning of the two swimming pools owned by the club in the 1970s and 1980s. In parallel to the increasingly frequent sporting successes, the club's popular sports, leisure and wellness offerings were successively expanded, increasing the number of members almost tenfold between 1980 and 2000 and only barely missed the 10,000 mark at the turn of the millennium. Since 1996 the SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 maintains a starting community with the swimmers of the SV Bayer Wuppertal , TSV Bayer Dormagen and TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen with the name SG Bayer.

Anniversary logo

In 2008, SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 celebrated its 100th anniversary and was awarded the Federal President's sports plaque for its services to popular sports at its official anniversary ceremony on May 17th in Krefeld- Uerdingen . A lot has happened on the SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 club complex in recent years. The 50-meter indoor swimming pool was renovated in 2012 and the in-house sauna in 2014. In the same year, SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 expanded its range of sports for members and external guests. Since August 2014, SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 has therefore been a certified provider of rehabilitation sports (in the water and in the gym). In addition, SV Bayer has been offering holiday camps since the 2014 autumn break (holiday care for groups of children during the Easter, summer and autumn holidays). Furthermore, the offer of the swimming school was supplemented by intensive swimming courses in the school holidays, children getting used to the water and baby swimming.

Water polo

General

Hardly any other club in Germany offers water polo from youth to high-performance on this basis. Both men and women play with their first teams in the 1st German Water Polo League. The teams train up to seven times a week. National players sometimes have to complete an even higher training schedule. The club is also very successful in the youth teams, where the U-11 and U-13 form the basis. Here boys and girls who have enjoyed their training in the club's swimming school train together. In order to be able to meet the demands of top-class sport, talents are carefully introduced to the high level of training and competition in the U-teams. In addition to top-class sport, the 3rd and 4th men's teams offer further opportunities to stay true to water polo.

swim

General

SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 offers talented swimmers the opportunity to train in various training groups, including competitive sports. As early as in the E-Youth, the young athletes take part in child-friendly competitions in order to take part in association, NRW and national competitions in the following years. In addition to competitive sports, the swimming club with its popular sports groups offers further training opportunities for amateur swimmers. The swimming sport is not only practiced by the "U20" - the "older semesters" are also involved. The "Masters" of SV Bayer regularly take part successfully in national and international competitions.

Shark school, children and youth activities

Shark school

In terms of numbers, by far the largest group of active swimmers are the teaching swimming groups in the "Hai-School", the swimming school of SV Bayer Uerdingen 08. From getting used to the water through to the gold swimming badge, SV Bayer tries to gently introduce its youngsters to the medium of "water" . The primary goal is to teach the children how to stay in the water safely and without time pressure and with lots of fun and games - that is, as child-friendly as possible. The uniform training concept is intended to ensure that the children, regardless of which course they are in, train at the same level of exercise. Ideally, the children should start at the age of four or five years and go through the swimming school from the first water experience in the teaching pool to the swimming units in the deep pool (25 m pool). After the swimming school, the children have the opportunity, depending on their level of ability, to switch to competitive swimming or popular sports or to further improve their swimming skills in an orientation course. The swimming school currently has around 600 children who learn to swim in 36 weekly courses. In addition to the shark school, SV Bayer offers intensive swimming courses during the school holidays, during which the children should learn to swim in the shortest possible time and make rapid progress in their swimming technique.

Holiday camps

Since autumn 2014, SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 has also been offering children and young people the opportunity to visit one of their holiday camps. The children are looked after in groups of 15 to 20 children. In addition to various games and fun offers in the water and on land, day trips are also made with the children.

Popular sport

General

The popular sports department provides club members and external guests of SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 with a wide range of offers. SV Bayer offers a wide range of courses, from courses such as aqua aerobics to speed aqua fitness and spinal gymnastics.

Rehabilitation and health sports

General

Since August 2014, SV Bayer 08 has been one of the certified providers of rehabilitation sports . These medically prescribed therapy measures take place in the gym and in the water, whereby the main focus of SV Bayer is on the offers in the area of water, which enable optimal joint-friendly rehabilitation. Under the motto “Fit-Bewegt-Gesund”, the association also offers non-members the opportunity to use the club facility for health sports. Due to the lively participation, SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 is planning to further expand rehabilitation sports. In the course of the expansion, offers in the area of company health management are also to be created.

Famous pepole

With Steffen Driesen , the factory club has a real exceptional talent in its own ranks: the Krefeld swimming ace was German champion 13 times between 1999 and 2007 and, for example, won the silver medal at the 2001 World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, with the 4 × 100 meter relay in 2001 as well as another relay silver at the Summer Olympics in Athens in 2004. The former Uerdingen national player Tim Wollthan is also a successful SV Bayer athlete. Wollthan, for example, was twice voted water polo player of the year in the DWL and was also the first to complete the DWL's list of goalscorers twice. In addition, the long-time captain of SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 can look back on 180 international matches as well as two World Cup, four European Championship and one Olympic participation.

successes

General

The eventful history of SV Bayer Uerdingen 08, especially as a result of the two world wars, has left some turning points in the success story of Germany's largest swimming club. There is a correspondingly large gap between the water polo championship title in 1926 and the renewed successes of the swimming and water polo teams from around the mid-1950s. Only then did things gradually improve again. This has been particularly the case since the 1990s: The water polo players at SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 are now a fixture in national and European competitions. Especially the women currently dominate the DWL (four double wins in a row). And the youth teams also win the championship titles in a row: a total of 26 German championships were able to book them between 1984 and 2007. It is no coincidence that SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 has been honored repeatedly by both the NRW Swimming Association and the Dresdner Bank (“The Green Belt for exemplary promotion of talent in the club”) for its pioneering promotion of young talent.
