Until the end of the 17th century there were only a few Greek fishing villages around today's Bebek for centuries . In the 18th century, the Ottoman upper class began to build their summer residences around Bebek. In the 19th century, Bebek was an independent village.

In 1840, the American missionary Cyrus Hamlin founded an English-language theological seminary in Bebek, which later became the Robert College , which in turn produced today's Boğaziçi Üniversitesi .

Demographics

Bebek is shaped by upper-class, mostly long-established Istanbul residents, it forms a stronghold of Kemalism . Many expatriates also live in Bebek. Among other things, this has the consequence that the square meter prices for real estate are the highest in Istanbul.

Infrastructure

Until the 1950s, Bebek was the final stop of a tram line , today the connection by public transport is largely limited to six bus lines starting in Sarıyer to Kabataş and Taksim in a southerly direction. Bebek has a jetty with scheduled ferry traffic: the line from Beykoz to Eminönü is served twice a day in each direction; the line from Emirgan to Çengelköy is shipped seven times a day. The line from Emirgan to Bebek is served nine times in each direction on Sundays and public holidays.

Culture

Life in Bebek is characterized on the one hand by the Boğaziçi Üniversitesi and on the other by the “lively” and “chic” nightlife : especially on the promenade, the children of wealthy parents show off their luxury cars.

Personalities

Due to its exclusivity, significantly more well-known people appeared in Bebek than in places of comparable size. A number of personalities moved their residence entirely to Bebek, including Mehmed Emin Ali Pasha at the turn of the 20th century and the industrialists Sakıp Sabancı and Sadberk Koç during the 20th century. The poet Abdülhak Hamit Tarhan was born in Bebek in 1852. The writer Aras Ören grew up in Bebek and is disgusted with what he sees as the “degenerate, mendacious traditionalist” middle-class culture of the place. Alfred Kantorowicz , who had rendered outstanding services to Turkish dentistry, lived in Cevdet Paşa Caddesi, Sağlık Apt , from 1933 . No. 5 .
