The Paps of Jura ( Gaelic : Beanntan Dhiùra ) are three mountains on the Scottish Hebridean island of Jura . The striking quartzite formations on the west coast of the island near Islay Sound represent the highest peaks on the island and rise up to 785 m in height. They can be seen from almost every place on the neighboring island of Islay and, in good weather, also from the Scottish mainland, more precisely from the Kintyre peninsula .

The name of the Paps of Jura is derived from their conical shape, which is vaguely reminiscent of breasts . The word Paps is derived from a Nordic name for breasts (compare similar mountain formations such as the Paps of Anu ). The individual mountains are called Beinn an Òir (Goldberg, 785 m), Beinn Shiantaidh (Holy Mountain, 757 m) and Beinn a 'Chaolais (Berg am Sund, 733 m).

The Isle of Jura whiskey distillery , based in Craighouse , the capital of Jura , released three limited special bottlings in 2009 that were named after the Paps of Jura. They differed in the composition of whiskey from different casks. Mountain of Gold matured in former Pinot Noir -, Mountain of the Sound in Cabernet-Sauvignon - and Sacred Mountain in Barolo barrels .

Tourism

The Paps of Jura are one of the most important tourist attractions in Jura. On the sparsely populated island there is no laid-out path to the mountains, but there are different directions for cross-country hikes. For the 17 km hike from the east coast of the island, including the ascent of all peaks, about 6-8 hours are needed. From the summit of Beinn an Òir are the islands of Islay, Mull , Scarba , Iona , Tiree , Colonsay and Oronsay , the Garvellachs archipelago , as well as the Black Cuillins on Skye , the hills of Arran , the Kintyre peninsula, the Northern Irish coast and the coast See Donegals . Every year a cross-country race takes place, which leads over the Paps of Jura and another four hills.
