history

High altar of the St. Joseph Chapel in Beller

Beller is an old Saxon settlement in Nethegau . Other spellings of the place are Balgeri, Balleri, Baldere, Belder, Beldere and Baldern. The district has 205 inhabitants.

In the 9th and 10th centuries, Beller and a long-destroyed Balderborch (Bellerburg) were first mentioned as Corveyer possessions. The castle was on a wooded hilltop east of Beller in the direction of Bruchhausen . The forest belongs partly to Bruchhausen, the Bruchhäusische Bellerberg and partly to the village of Beller, the so-called Bellerburg . The wooded area that is now part of the town of Brakel was sold to the municipality of Beller in 1827 by Count von Bocholtz-Asseburg . Even before that, the community had wood justice there .

In 1741 the small baroque chapel was consecrated to St. Joseph . Beller has belonged to the parish of Erkeln since the Middle Ages . Today the predominantly Roman Catholic town is looked after by the Nethegau Pastoral Association.

On January 1, 1970, Beller was incorporated into the city of Brakel.
