Johannes Fleckner

Johannes Fleckner SVD (born August 17, 1911 in Beller ; † December 24, 2003 in Sankt Augustin ) was a German Catholic theologian .

Life

In 1925 he moved from the Beller elementary school to the Steyler Missionaries' grammar school in Bad Driburg . In order to be able to do his Abitur , he moved to the Michaelsgymnasium in Steyl in 1930 and passed his matriculation examination there in 1932. The novitiate with simultaneous study of philosophy until 1935 in Sankt Augustin followed. From 1936 to 1940 he studied theology in Rome . He was ordained a priest in Rome on October 20, 1939. His parents and sister Elisabeth were not allowed to attend this ceremony due to the veto of a local group leader from the neighboring village. The home primacy then took place in June 1940 in Erkeln and Beller. As early as 1940, the new priest was preparing for his long journey to China , which he and eight confreres began on September 22, 1940. With the Trans-Siberian they arrived in Beijing on October 11, 1940 via Moscow . Until 1941 he first studied the language of this large country. In 1941/1942 he worked first as a chaplain and from 1942 to 1948 as a lecturer in the episcopal seminary of Yenchowfu / Shantung . In 1949 he became a mission pastor in Tsovhsia and remained so until his expulsion by the communists in 1955. After a short stay in his homeland, he went to Rome to study church history in a special course . In 1956 he was appointed professor and until his retirement in 1979 taught as professor of church and religious history at the PTH SVD St. Augustin near Bonn . In 1968/1969 he stayed in Taiwan in order to write the biography of the Chinese Cardinal Thomas Tien Ken-sin after researching the sources . He was elected Pope John XXIII in 1958 . had accompanied him to Rome as an interpreter. As a China expert, he was a guest on a number of radio programs and a television program in 1962. He was buried in the monastery cemetery in St. Augustine .
