Benjamin Katz (born June 14, 1939 in Antwerp , Belgium ) is a German photographer .

biography

Benjamin Katz's parents were Berlin Jews who fled to Belgium. His father died in the Gurs camp in France. His mother took Benjamin Katz to Berlin in 1956 , where he studied at the University of Fine Arts (today Berlin University of the Arts ). In 1959 the mother died. In 1963 he founded the Werner & Katz gallery together with Michael Werner . The opening exhibition with paintings and drawings by Georg Baselitz turned into a scandal when two paintings were confiscated by the public prosecutor because of immoral content. He did not continue to work with Michael Werner, but Benjamin Katz has always worked as a gallery owner in his sphere of activity.

He has lived in Cologne since 1972 and works as a chronicler and essayist of the West German art scene, especially in the Ruhr area . He has been friends with Georg Baselitz for many years. He has been working as a freelance photographer since 1976. He was also often artistically active at the documenta . At performances and art-related events, Benjamin Katz captures fleeting moments with his photographs and portrays artists, patrons and other participants in the art and culture scene. Benjamin Katz taught photography at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 2006 to 2008 .

In November 2015 it became known that he would be awarded the Art Prize of the Artists for 2016 at the Great Art Exhibition NRW Düsseldorf .
